Great Bavarian Hiking Opportunities

Guest card as free ticket: In Oberstaufen walkers are entitled to free bus travel and unlimited use of the mountain cable cars as part of the towns’ attractive accommodation package.

Alpine summits, narrow ridges, sunny footpaths surrounded by lush meadows and a well earned walkers’ break at an Alpine Hut makes it a walkers’ paradise. Combined with the extensive health and Spa treatments that the town has to offer and the mild but bracing climate ranging from 800 to 1800 meters makes it easy to see why Oberstaufen received the award of Hiking area of the Year 2008.

The Regional Environmental Offices counts Oberstaufen and its surrounding area to Bavaria’s most well-preserved geological habitats. Oberstaufen is not only the tourist centre of Germany and Austria’s first combined Natural Preserve, the Nagelfluhkette, but is Germany’s only “Schroth and Health Spa” and is world famous for its cleansing, detox and purifying body treatment programme. The town also has the most Alpine Huts in the district with over 150 agricultural settlements. Some of the huts are easy to reach by car or bike and the ones situated higher are accessible by cable-car. Oberstaufen really is a walkers’ paradise: Visitors staying overnight in Oberstaufen greatly benefit from unlimited use of the complete mountain transport system free of charge with the Oberstaufen-Plus guest card.

More than 300 hotels and guesthouses take part in the Oberstaufen-Plus programme. This programme enables their visitors to have unlimited use of the mountain railway system and shuttle bus. Some of the many other benefits include:- free access into Oberstaufen’s adventure swimming pool, unlimited use of the summer tobogganing runs and of course in winter unlimited use of the ski slopes and ski passes for the duration of their stay, as well as other attractive price reductions. Visitors staying at the 18 Golf establishments offering the Oberstaufen-Plus-Golf programme are entitled to use the three panoramic Golf courses, boasting a total of 60 greens, without any extra charge for greenfees.

Experience the most spectacular hikes:

Conquer eight summits in one day

One of the most spectacular walks in Allgäu is the seven hour hike along the ridge of the Nagelfluhkette, Oberstaufens mountain range. The 15 km tour is suitable only for experienced walkers as it crosses all eight summits from the 1833m Hochgrat near Oberstaufen to the 1451m Mittag near Immenstadt. The terrain varies from a gentle climb to mountainous paths and from forest trails to lush meadows. In clear sunny weather walkers experience a breathtaking view from the main ridge of the National Park. It is possible to see a panoramic view of all the mountains from Säntis in eastern Switzerland to Vorarlberg and Allgäu in Germany and the Zugspitze in Austria. The ascent by cable-car to the top of the Hochgrat is free of charge for visitors with the Oberstaufen-Plus guest card.

Scenic tour overlooking the Alps and Moors

Visitors can discover on a walk through the German-Austrian Natural Preserve, Nagelfluhkette what geological stone sediment looks like. Those intrigued by the name “Hergotts-Beton” (God’s cement) can see for themselves this amazing natural formation. The 14 km tour begins with a trip up the mountain by cable-car to Imberg near Steibis. Use of the cable-car is free of charge for visitors holding the Oberstaufen-Plus guest card. The walk then wields its way along the Alpine-Adventure-Path with 47 man-made stations. The path continues past the alpine huts of Hochbühl and Hörmoos and onto the Falkenhütte to the alpine hotel Hochhäderich. All of the huts serve refreshments.

Experienced walkers and mountaineerers should take a longer detour in order not to miss the spectacular ascent along the ridge to the summits of Falken and Hochhäderich before reaching the alpine hotel Hochhäderich.

The tour continues from the alpine hotel, on a boardwalk through the moors of the Natural Preserve before reaching the Moos alpine hut on the other side of the valley. The tour takes approximately 5 hours without stopping for refreshments and is ideal for families. The Alpine-Adventure-Path is suitable for prams.
