Job Description for Lead Teacher

Qualifications and Experience:

1.)An appropriate recognised qualification in Education specialising in the relevant subject.

2.)Experience of leading a departmental development which could be considered adequate preparation for this role.

3.)The necessary qualificationsand ability to teach the subject to pupils of all abilities inKey Stages 3, 4 and 5.

4.)Knowledge of the latest developments in teaching and learning in the relevant subject including requirements for external examinations at KS4 and KS5.

Core Purpose:

To give professional leadership and management of the subject area alongside the HoD and Assistant HoD (where applicable) to secure high quality teaching and learning at all Key Stages. To work with the HoD to ensure the effective use of resources and staff to secure improved pupil outcomes at KS3 and KS4.

Responsibilities:

1.)To support in the day to day management of the team where necessary. To act as performance management reviewer for members of the team as appropriate. To support new staff, including PGCE, ITT and NQT teachers where applicable.

2.)To contribute to regular department meetings, subject specific INSET sessions and moderation activities alongside the HoD and Assistant HoDas appropriate.

3.)To lead specifically on the development and delivery of an appropriate curriculum at KS3 and 4ensuring that learning outcomes are maximised for all pupils. To include:

  1. Developing effective and appropriate schemes of learning.
  2. Overseeing the delivery of the KS3 and KS4 curriculum in line with the requirements for external examinations.
  3. Embedding a rigorous assessment protocol that is effective in identifying pupil strengthsand areas for development at KS3 and 4.
  4. Liaising with the HoD/Assistant HoD to ensure that the KS4 curriculum is adequately preparing learners for KS5 and actively promoting uptake of courses Post-16.

4.)To work alongside the HoD to effectively develop the quality of teaching and learning at KS3 and 4.Involvement in monitoring (as appropriate) in line with the school T&L monitoring plan (working alongside the HoD).

5.)Tocoach other staff within the team to develop consistency in T&L at KS3 and 4.

6.)To be able to interpret assessment and pupil progress datain collaboration with the HoD and to make effective use of it to improve pupil outcomes at KS4.

7.)To moderate staff predictions following data entry and to identify any issues with the quality and accuracy of these predictions. To demonstrate a good awareness of pupil progress data at KS3 and KS4 to provide an accurate indication of the progress of learners within the subject.

8.)To implement or direct staff to implement appropriate interventions to support learners to make sustained progress.

9.)To ensure that there is a suitable system of assessment at KS3 and KS4 that all staff are aware of the requirements for external assessments.

10.)To motivate and support colleagues, promoting the school ethos by making a contribution to the wider school community. To encourage a contribution to extra-curricular activities by the department.

11.)To be able to build good relationships based on mutual respect with young people and to positively influence their behaviour. To staff in the team to ensure that high expectations are set across the department and that behaviour for learning sanctions are supported where appropriate.

12.)To demonstrate a clear understanding of the role of those working in child care settings with regard to promoting and safeguarding the welfare of young people. A clear commitment to acting in the best interests of the health, safety and welfare of young people at all times.
