Gallipoli Dawn Service 2015 Tour

Introduction

As part of the Anzac centenary commemoration, the Commonwealth Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) has allocated 400places nationally for students and chaperones to attend the Gallipoli Dawn Service in April 2015.

The Victorian Government has accepted 98 places for Victorian students and chaperones to attend the Gallipoli Dawn Service on 25 April 2015 as part of a five day tour to Turkey. The Victorian contingent will consist of:

• 80 students
• 18 chaperones.

The aims of attending the Gallipoli Dawn Service 2015 Tour are to enable students and their chaperones:

• the opportunity to represent their family, school, community and state at the commemoration of one of Australia’s most important historical events
• to honour and keep alive the memory of the Anzacs and their contribution to the Australia of the 21st century
• to experience and better understand the geography and culture of the area in which the Anzacs fought and died
• to learn and understand more of that period of Australian history
• to learn more about and consider the realities of war and peace in our history and our world today
• to bring back home this knowledge and these experiences and then to share them with their family, school and community so that they too, will learn.

The proposed 2015 tour

20 April Melbourne to Istanbul

21 April Istanbul – visit Topkapi Palace Museum, Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome, the Grand Bazaar

and the underground Yerebatan Cistern

22 April Istanbul – visit the Hagia Sophia and cruise on the Bosphorous;travel to Kesan

23 April Travel from Kesan to the Gallipoli Peninsula;tour the Peninsula visiting battlefields, cemeteries and memorials

24 April Visit Troy

25 April Attend the Dawn Service at Anzac Cove and walk to a special Australian service at Lone Pine; travel back to Istanbul

26 April Istanbul to Melbourne

Costs

The cost of the five night tour is approximately $5,000. The suggested five day itinerary places priority on the Gallipoli Dawn Service with additional activity selected for its relevance to Australian service in Turkey during World War One.

The Victorian Government will provide a subsidy of two-thirds of the cost for each student and full funding of the costs for chaperones.

The selected students will be requested to work with their school and community to seek fundraising support of one third of their costs (approximately $1,600). Students who may not be able to fundraise part or all of the required money should not be deterred from applying.

Application process

Applications are sought from eligible students and teachers to become a member of the Victorian contingent for the Gallipoli Dawn Service 2015 Tour.

Applications will open on Tuesday,22 April 2014 and close at midnight onFriday,13 June 2014 and should be submitted electronically to .

The selection process and criteria are outlined below.

Selection process

Applications are sought from all school sectors across Victoria for the student places. Only applications that are received by the closing date will be considered for selection.

A selection panel will be established to consider applications based on the key selection criteria (below) and to recommend a maximum of 20 students and three reserves chosen from each of the four Victorian education regions.

The students and teacher chaperones will be selected based ona balance of a diverse range of areas such as gender;location (metropolitan/regional/rural); school sector (government/Catholic/independent); family military history;and cultural and linguistic backgrounds, including Koorie.

Teachers from all Victorian secondary schools interested in applying for chaperone positions will follow a similar selection process.

1. Demonstrated involvement in, and commitment to, community activities
2. Willingness and capability to share and communicate their learning from the tour
3. School principal reference attesting to student’s readiness and suitability for the tour and confirming the student’s application
4. Demonstrated knowledge of, and interest in, Australian and the Anzac tradition.

Desirable

1. Demonstrated school and communityachievements.

In developing your response you should convince the selection panel with evidence that demonstrates how well you meet each of both the essential and desirable criteria.

Your response can be submitted as a written, visual or aural digital file, but you should remember that the selection panel is assessing your application on the information it contains, rather than its creativity.

The written length of your response should not exceed 1000 words.

Part C: one (minimum) to three (maximum) references.

One reference must be from your school principal. It should attest to your readiness and suitability for the tour and confirm what you have in your application.

1. Teacher chaperone to be a practising secondary teacher in a Victorian school in 2015
2. Teacher chaperone to have a minimum of five years’ teaching experience with secondary age students
3. Registered with the VIT.

Selection criteria

1. Demonstrated high level professional and personal qualities
2. Demonstrated experience in organising and leading student activities, camps and trips, including internationally
3. Willingness and capability to share and communicate the learning from the tour
4. Demonstrated knowledge of, and interest in, Australian history and the Anzac tradition.
5. School principal’s recommendation
