Stand Downs are one part of the Department of Veterans Affairs efforts to provide services for homeless veterans. Services such as food, clothing, health screenings, social services, housing, and counseling are a variety of offerings from volunteers in the community. Stand Downs are collaborative events, coordinated between local VAs, and other government and community agencies, who serve the homeless.

As a LTC in the Army Nurse Corp and CEO of TayLORD Health, LLC Foot and Nail Care School, I have arranged for Nurses and Missionaries interested in perfecting their skills in Foot and Nail Careto participate in their local StandDown and give back to our Homeless Veterans. The team of nurses, PT’s, lawyers, missionaries, and medics may serve 15-25 veterans per day of the event. Previous graduates are welcome to participate for experience and to “give back” to those who have served. Sadly, we have over 1000 registered homeless VETS in San Diego alone.

The needs are foot and nail care, education, shoes, socks, referrals to an on-site DPM, and morale and emotional support – some laying on of hands for healing, hope, and humor. It is phenomenal learning but usually an emotional opportunity.

TayLORD Health, LLC will provide supplies for foot care, instructional materials, meals, refreshments, and socks.

Other needs may be donated

shoes and socks - men (sizes 9-15), females (sizes 5-10), foot care utensils – nippers, clippers, files

orange sticks, raspers, antifungal powder, Vicks mentholated (generic from $$ store works)

inserts for shoes to off-load, mole skin

anything you can think that a soldier may need to promote comfort while living on the streets

IOW(inotherwords)they are mobile(walking 5-10 miles per night)lightweight and necessary items only – it is all on their person
