Finding Full Text Articles in Nursing Journals Using Online Databases

FINDING FULL TEXT ARTICLES IN NURSING JOURNALS USING ONLINE DATABASES

  1. CINAHL PLUS WITH FULL TEXT database:

On the library’s website, under the FIND ARTICLES heading, click on “Online Periodicals (Databases).” Under the heading “Online Periodicals by Subject,” click “Nursing and Health,” and thenselect “CINAHL Plus with Full Text” from the list. If the ezPROXY Login page appears,enter your username and password.

a) Click on link for “Advanced Search” below the search box.

b) Click in the first search box and type nursing and USA. Select “SB Journal Subset” from the

drop-down menu in the box to the right. This limits the search to American nursing journals.

c) Add your search term(s) to a blank search box. The search will retrieve results that contain

your term(s) in the title, abstract, or subject heading. You can also select a specific field to search using the drop down menu.

d)Add the phrase "evidence based" to another blank search box.

e) Under “Limit your results,” put a check mark in the “Full Text” box.

f) Next to “Publication Date from,” indicate your required publication date(s), and click <Search>.

CINAHL PLUS WITH FULL TEXT

  1. Search results will be displayed in order by relevance. To see the most recent articles first, click on “Relevance Sort” on the blue menu bar and choose “Date Descending.”
  1. Clickon the title of the article to get more informationabout the article, such as an abstract or summary of the article. To see the full text of the article, click on the “PDFFull Text”iconor the “Linked Full Text” icon on the left side.
  1. NOTE: To print the whole article, you need to display the full text of the article first.
  1. To email the article, click on the Emailicon on the right andmake sure there is a check mark in the box to include “PDF as Separate attachment.” NOTE: To email an article with “Linked Full Text,” you must open the full text of the article first and then email it.
  1. To see examples of how to cite the article in different styles, including APA style, click on the link labeled “Cite” on the right side. NOTE: The citation still needs to be checked to make sure it is in the correct APA style. Use the library’s guide to “Citing Online Sources in APA Style” (also available on the library’s website) to check the citation for proper spacing, indentation, etc., and make the necessary corrections. Examples from the library’s APA guide are included below.

How to cite a journal article that has a DOI (Digital Object Identifier):

  1. SCIENCE DIRECT database:

a)Under theScience Direct logo on the green menu bar, click on “Search.”

b)To the right of “All Sources,” click on the clear tab labeled “Journals.”

c)Click in box labeled “Search” and type nurs* and change the drop-down menu to “Journal Name.”

d)Click in next empty box and type in your topic. Then add the word AND followed by the phrase "evidence based."

e)Under “Source,” change the drop down menu from “All journals” to “Subscribed journals.”

f)Under “Subject,” choose “Nursing and Health Professions” from the drop down menu.

g)For “Date Range,” select dates. Depending on the journal, articles older than 2000 may or may not be available for free, even if they are from “subscribed journals.”

h)Scroll down and click on the “Search” button below the box that says “Volume.”

i)Results are sorted by relevance. To see the most recent articles first, at the top of the results list on the far right next to the words “Sort by,” choose “Date.”

j)Click on the title of the article to get more information about the article, such as an abstract or summary of the article.

k)To determine if the article comes from a journal that is published in the United States, click on the name of the journalfound below the tab that says “Article.” To the right of the picture of the journal, click on “About this Journal” and look for an affiliation with an American nursing organization. If one is listed, just click on the back button to return to the article. If no specific American affiliation is listed here, click on “Editorial Board” on the right side of the screen and when a new window opens, check to see if the editors are based in the U.S. Then close this window. You should still have a window open with the page for the journal – just click on the back button to return to the specific article.

l)The full-text of the article may be found below the article title. If not, you will need to click on the PDFicon above the title of the article to see the full text.

m)You can click on “E-mail article” to the right of the PDF icon or you can print the article in HTML or PDF format.

n)The full-text of the article should include all the information you need to cite the article but you will need to put this information into APA style. Use the library’s guide to “Citing Online Sources in APA Style” (also available on the library’s website) to see how to cite a journal article in APA style. For additional guidance on citing sources in APA style, consult the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th edition) in the library’s Reference Collection: REF BF 76.7 .P83 2010. 3. DETERMINING IF ANY OF THE LIBRARY’S DATABASES PROVIDE A SPECIFIC JOURNAL IN

FULL TEXT

  1. On the library’s website, under the FIND ARTICLES heading, click “Online Periodicals by Title.”
  1. Typethe name of the periodical in the search box and click “Search.”

5. Check the results to see if the journal is listed and which databases you can use to access the full text of the journal. The years that are available may vary depending on the database.

  1. On the library’s website, under the FIND ARTICLES heading, click “Online Periodicals by Title.”
  1. Under “Browse e-journals by subject,” select “Health and Biological Sciences” from the drop down menu and click “Search.”

3. Scroll down the alphabetical list and choose “Nursing.”
