Child Bereavement Service Film Project

Artist Brief

Film Makers/ Media Arts Worker and Graphic Designer

Deadline: 5pm Wednesday 10th September 2014

Walsall Council Creative Development Team in partnership with St Giles Hospice Lichfield are seeking film/ media artists and a graphic designer to work with a group of young peoplefacing loss and bereavementin a series of creative workshops. The focus of the project will be to engage the core group in the design, development and production of an online film resource and distinctive branding for the new range of Child Bereavement Services delivered by St Giles Hospice Lichfield.

Workshops will incorporate creative consultation activities which will explore, inspire and capture young people’s ideas to inform the development of the film content as well as the style, wording and design of the new branding (Service name, logo and strap line ). All the final work will reflect the responses of children and young people to the issues surrounding death, dying and loss and creating new resources that will promote the Child Bereavement Services in an accessible way that will effectively communicate to both bereaved and none bereaved children and young people.

Participants:

The core group of participants will be recruited via the Hospice’s Child Bereavement Service. The maximum group size will be 15 young people aged 12-18yrs. A majority of these will be young people who have/ or are currently accessing bereavement support with a few other additional participants recruited from John Taylor High School Academy – a school which has previously worked on creative projects with St Giles Hospice and is keen to develop this relationship.

It is important that the young people have full ownership of the project and the resources produced.

The project needs to achieve the following objectives:

  • Engage the core group in creative and enjoyable arts workshops
  • Create a safe and supportive environment for young people to reflect on and share with their peers what it is like to be bereaved so that their thoughts and experiences can benefit others
  • Create an online film resource (15 mins max – made up of short episodic films) that promotes the Child Bereavement Service in an accessible way so that it effectively communicates with all young people whether currently accessing the bereavement service or may access it in the future.
  • Create a new brand for the service (logo, name, strap line). Whilst this needs to be distinctive and unique it also needs to link to St Giles Hospice existing logo/brand.
  • Support the young people to achieve a Bronze Arts Award. Creating a short ‘behind the scenes’ film which captures the creative process and young people’s collective thoughts and their experiences of taking part in the project.
