FIAT PUNTONUMBER ONE IN EUROPE
The Fiat Punto has shot to the top of the European sales charts, with the car that is set to return Fiat to Australia in the middle of this year claiming the top spot across Europe in January.
In a market that climbed by just 2.9 per cent, the Fiat Punto blasted Fiat to a 26.2 per cent increase as the Punto raced into Fiat showrooms across Europe and roared out again at almost the same speed, according to figures released by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. The Punto was not only the leading seller in the B-segment, but also in the European car market outright, with sales of 37,977, eclipsing the Renault Clio’s 36,016 and the Ford Fiesta’s 31,470 sales totals.
This is despite the fact the new Punto is not on sale in every European market. Sales, for example, only started on 11 February in the UK, but what a start! On the first day, regardless of cold, miserableUK weather, 12,000 people visited Fiat dealers, took or booked 6900 test drives and 1285 people bought the new Punto on the spot. Nor did Fiat fans have to go to their nearest dealer in the UK, with the new Punto featuring the in windows of the world-famous Harrods Department Store, the first time a car has been display in the renowned London store. With the UK roads already carrying half million of the first generation Punto, the first days sales for the new car are clearly just an indication of what is to come.
The Fiat Punto will arrive in Australia in the middle of 2006, heralding the return of Fiat to Australia. The Punto will be the first of a range of cars from one of Europe’s largest car makers and one with an enviable reputation for producing small cars that are stylish, fun to drive and good value for money.
