Farmingdale Executive Committee

December 2, 2016

Present: Loucas Chrysafi; Adam Filios; Karen Gelles (Secretary); Howard Gold; Nazrul Islam; Laura Joseph; Orla Smyth LoPiccolo; Lloyd Makarowitz (Chairperson); Abeba Mussa;Luisa Nappo-Dattoma; Christine Nebocat; Louis Scala; Yolanda Segarra.

The meeting was called to order at 9:30am.

  1. The minutes of November 11, 2016 were approved.
  1. Report of Liaisons
  2. AAS met to discuss the grading schedule for graduate classes. Will meet again December 12.
  3. Curriculum Committee will be continuing to meet twice a week for longer meetings in order to accommodate the large number of submissions. At the last 3 meetings, 28 CCPs were approved and 3 were tabled. They met with representatives of the new masters degree program and representatives from Dental Hygiene.
  4. Elections Committee will be posting the nominations form.
  5. International Education: no report.
  6. Multicultural Committee will be holding a gala on April 19 from 4:00-7:00pm.
  7. Planning and Budget Committee: Met on December 1 to discuss the charge of the PBC and to review the membership. The CPRA will be meeting on December 15.
  8. Promotions Committee: no report.
  9. Sabbatical and Reduced Load Committee will be meeting on December 13.
  10. Student Affairs and Services Committee: no report.
  11. Environmental Health Committee: no report.
  12. Personal Safety Committee: no report.
  13. Distinguished Faculty Rank Committee will be continuing discussion with administration to clarify who is responsible for placing the call for nominations.
  1. Report of the Acting Provost, Dr. Laura Joseph
  2. Dr. Joseph distributed a draft Policy for Service Animals and Emotional Support Animals. There was discussion about notifications to faculty and identification worn by animals.
  3. The Enrollment Management Task Force is working on a multi-year recruitment plan.
  4. There will be a meeting with SUNY Provost Alexander Cartwright on December 16. In preparation for this meeting, Dr. Joseph has been gathering info from across campus.
  5. A group is working on the Masters Degree Program launch. The opening of applications will be announced soon, with marketing for the program beginning in January, 2017. Articulation agreements are being created with Alfred State and SUNY Morrisville.
  6. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education has reaffirmed the College’s accreditation, and commends it for the quality of the report and process. The next review is in 2020/2021. Dr. Joseph and Dr. Michael Goodstone will be attending a MSCHE meeting that will address the new standards.
  7. There will be an Applied Learning Town Hall on December 6 at 11am.
  8. A task force will be created to look at curriculum review to ensure we are in alignment with SUNY requirements, especially with regard to prerequisites for upper-division courses.
  1. Report of the Chairperson, Dr. Lloyd Makarowitz
  2. Dr. Makarowitz distributed a statement from the Executive Committee of the University Faculty Senate of the State University of New York “condemning intolerance and hateful expression on campuses,” and calling upon “all members of the SUNY community to conduct themselves with civility, tolerance, and respect for the diversity of people and ideas.” The FEC endorsed this statement unanimously.

  2. K. Gelles distributed a report on the promotions guidelines at 19 state operated campuses that describe whether they automatically grant promotion to Associate Professor at the same time they grant continuing appointment.
  3. The recently failed proposal to amend the bylaws to require a minimum of 3 years in rank before applying for promotion was discussed, with a request for clarification of whether 3 years must have passed before one is allowed to submit an application for promotion, or whether 3 years must have passed by the time a promotion is granted.
  4. There was discussion of ways to enhance the monetary reward for promotion to Full Professor/Librarian if a greater number of years is expected before application to Full Professor/Librarian.

  2. Faculty Senator Lou Scala discussed making environmental sustainability a hallmark of the campus, and has encouraged Senate President Peter Knuepfer to invite Farmingdale faculty to future Senate meetings to discuss initiatives here. Orla Smyth LoPiccolo mentioned that there is an organization that focuses on sustainability in higher education.
