Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to Term 4. There is definitely a feeling of spring in the air so we are looking forward to some milder weather and more opportunities of learning taking place outside the classroom.

Our topic this term is Space. We have planned lots of ‘hands on’ practical sessions which are educational as well as fun! Below we have listed some Space websites which we will be using in school but they are also worth exploring with your child at home:

Reading

We would like to thank all of you who regularly hear your child read at home. This is definitely having an impact and we are delighted with the progress which the children are making.

In weeks 2 and 3 and as part of the children’s guided reading sessions, we would like all the children to have a copy of Peace at Last by Jill Murphy. Some of you might already have a copy of this but it can be obtained through the library, book shops or looking on ebay. Failing that, please start searching in charity shops!

Please let your child bring in the book (Clearly named please!) the week beginning, Monday 6th March. Ensure that your child’s name is written inside the front cover. Thank you.

Maths

Thank you to all those parents/carers who are completing the family Maths scrapbooks. This is having a definite impact on your child’s progress.

Forest School

Once again we want to thank all of you who regularly help with Forest School. The children really benefit from this wonderful experience. As you know, we have had to cancel Forest on a number of occasions due to the fact that we have not had sufficient help. This can result in the children becoming very disappointed, plus they are obviously missing out on a very vital part of their learning. As a result, we would like to purpose that every family sign up for a least one session per term. If you are unable to attend the Forest yourself, please find a substitute helper to help instead. We are happy for friends or relatives to help. The current list for Term 4 is ready for you to sign. There is also a list for you to tick indicating that your family has signed up .Thank you for your co-operation.

Wow Tree

Thank you to all of you who regularly fill in a leaf for our Wow Tree. This means a lot to the children since they love to share their latest achievements. Please ensure that your child brings in at least 2 leaves this term. We have included some new Wow Leaves with this newsletter. Below are the areas which we would like you to focus on but remember that a Wow Leaf can be given by you for any achievement that your child may have made! We love to celebrate with the children!

Week 1 / I can play a board game like Snakes and Ladders and successfully use my counter to ‘count on’
Week 2 / I can say 1 more/2 more for a given number up to 10/20
Week 3 / I can say 1 less/2 less for a given number up to 10/20
Week 4 / I found out 2 facts about Space which I didn’t know before
Week 5 / I can hop
Week 6 / I found a collection of 3 or 4 objects and made up a story about them
Week 7 / I have visited the library
and chosen 1
fiction book and 1 non-
fiction book

Targets

This week, your child will be bringing home a Target Book. There will be 3 targets for this term which we would like your child to achieve. The Target Book can be used for practising. We would appreciate your support with this. Targets will also continue in Terms 5 and 6.

High Frequency /Tricky Words

We continue to practise reading and spelling these words in school and many of your children will be given lists to practise in their Target books. Knowing how to spell these words will have such an impact on your child’s writing.

Please encourage your child to practise reading these words. When they feel confident with doing this, they can also practise spelling them as well. Please make your child aware of word patterns as well as words within words for example,’is’ in this and the in they.

Below are listed the complete list of words which we would like the children to be able to read and hopefully spell by the time that they leave Apple Class.

List 1 / List 2 / List 3 / List 4 / List 5
I / be / into / day / dog
is / we / her / play / big
it / me / are / and / get

a / go / no / going / can
at / to / went / see
am / you / was / this

he / for / away / cat

There will be a spelling Workshop at 8.30 am on Wednesday 8th March, starting at 8.30am in the hall, when we will be explaining how we teach spelling. We are looking forward to seeing you then.

Show and Tell

Below is a list of the Train groups for Show and Tell. Please help your child to practise what they are going to say so that they get the most benefit from this experience. Thank you

Week 2 (27th Feb) / Blue Blueberries Train Group
Week 3 (6th Mar) / Green Pears Train Group
