5SAFETY

Safety is the responsibility of all Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) personnel, all contractors, experimenters, range users and tenants while conducting operations at the EsrangeSpaceCenter or other off-range locations. This requires a concerted effort by all personnel to operate in a manner that will minimize the risks inherent in performing rocket, aircraft, balloon and other operations. Safety considerations early in the planning stages of a program or project will reduce the possibility of costly engineering changes and/or scheduling delays. Therefore, coordination with the Esrange Project Manager should be established as early in the planning stages of the project as possible. Esrange personnel should be notified of and be present at technical interchange meetings, preliminary design and system design reviews and flight readiness reviews where ground and flight safety issues are addressed.

SSC policy is to conduct all operations in accordance with Swedish law, ordinances andprovisions and within the risk levels specified in the Esrange Safety Manual.This manual defines the specific requirements which shall be met to implement thispolicy.
TheEsrange Safety Manual (ESM) has been drawn up in order to identify requirements

and implement safety policies and criteria for ground safety and flight safety when

launching unmanned air vehicles, stratospheric balloons and sounding rockets

from EsrangeSpaceCenter.It also defines specific design requirements, restrictions, operational procedures, andsupport requirements.It identifies data requirements necessary for Esrange to perform appropriate safetyanalysis and grant approval to conduct operations.The purpose of this manual is also to acquaint range users with the range safety andsecurity organization at Esrange.

The Esrange Safety Manual (ESM) is available in PDF format at the SSC website
to be sent upon request.You will be given the Esrange Safety and Security Compliance Confirmation (ESSCC) form after your arrival at the launch site and be required to sign it confirming acceptance of the safety conditions and criteria’s stated in the Esrange Safety Manual.

A compulsory safety briefing will during build up be held with all personal (scientists, guests and Esrange staff) involved in campaign.

5.2Flight stress

The gondola and equipment fastened to the gondola must be designed to withstand extreme conditions during the flight.

  • A vertical acceleration of 10G directed downwards
  • An upwards directed shock at 45° and equal to 5 times the weight of the gondola
