I Course Description

This is an interdisciplinary course that combines theology, anthropology, sociology, developmental studies and contemporary realities to understand the mission for urban transformation.

II Course Rational

To enable students to understand urban theology process, how cities emerge with special focus on urban poor settlements and urban systems and structures that impacts the people living in slums. This would help a student to understand the city with social, cultural and biblical insight.

Knowing the realities, the student would find ways and means to be engaged with missional intentions and Christ – like love and motivation to bring in transformation that brings the Kingdom of God into the lives of people and bring Glory to God.

This transformation would have ripple effect that it would embrace the whole city.

III Student Learning Outcomes

·  Cognitive

o  Able to use biblical basis and social analytical tools(ethnographic and social analysis) to understand urban realities.

o  Students will be able to articulate a coherent, comprehensive vision of urban transformation

·  Affective

o  Students will demonstrate a deepened commitment to a vision for urban transformation through their personal lifestyle

o  Students will develop an empathy with migrants, marginalized, aor urban poor people

·  Skills

o  Students will demonstrate information gathering skills, e.g. informant interviewing, field note-taking through direct involvement with communities outside the classroom

o  Students will learn data analysis/ interpretation skills….

o  These will contribute to understanding needs of the urban people such that in other courses they will be working to meet the felt needs that would open up the spiritual need to know Lord Jesus Christ.

I / Biblical view of cities / How does this understanding provide a new vision? Reflect
II / Historical Development of Cities / Visit historical places of your city and construct the history of your city
III / Migration – Kinds of migration – Voluntary / Involuntary – Individual/ Corporate / Interview a couple who are in the city for two years after their migration. / Present two ‘Push factors” that causes migration from villages.
IV / Bible and migration

-  God loves migrants / Interview a young migrant who became Christian after coming into your city. / Present two “pull factors” that attracts young people to cities
V / Paul – Jewish migrants / Reflect on the strategy used by Paul to reach Jewish migrants

-  Sense of belonging / Read City of Joy and try to understand poor rural migrants’ life style in a city
VII / Contribution of Urban poor to city in terms of hygiene, menial jobs, dangerous jobs, dirty jobs / List five specific contribution a particular slum in your city provides for the city.
VIII / Understanding ethnic diversity in the slums / Find out the affinity factor that keeps the slum dwellers together or find out the cause of groupism in the slums or rivalry between two slums
IX / Politics in slums
Vote banks
Political mobilization / Observe the political process in the slum you work and write a reflection paper.
X / Religion in slums – unity and uniformity / Find out how rural migrants transplant their religious life from village to a city slum- worship, festivals, etc.

Community – water, electricity, approach roads, sanitation, health / Describe the family life of one slum dwelling family.

VII Expectations and Grading

-  20% for attendance and participation

-  20% for activities (interviews, film reviews, site visits, case studies…)

-  30% for book reviews (using standard HBI format)

-  30% for integrative reflection paper
