Summary:In the workplace, we have been conditioned to “leave our emotions at the door.” Most people believe that emotions are not welcome and that team and work decisions should be based upon rational, logical reasoning. In this program, we will concentrate on the growing body of science in the emerging field of Emotional Intelligence (EI). Participants will explore the use of emotions as a critical step in helping to be more effective managers/employees, better communicators and more productive team members.The Professional Benefits of Enhanced Emotional Intelligence are:

  • Effective leadership and supervisory skills
  • Improved communication
  • Reduced workplace conflict
  • Better problem solving skills
  • Increased likelihood of promotion

Training Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  • Define “EI” and why it is important for personal and professional success
  • Explain the concepts of Emotional Intelligence from the work of Daniel Goleman, Ph.D.
  • Differentiate between what is Emotional Intelligence, and what is not Emotional Intelligence
  • Examine the cause/effect of an emotional hijack
  • Recognize and identify the Five Essential Competencies of Emotional Intelligence which build on each other to raise an individual’s EI
  • Develop methods to be more intentional in the actions that effect the work environment by completing exercises on the Five Essential Competencies of Emotional Intelligence
  • Review EI toolkit to identify additional EI concepts that relate to personal and professional success

In addition, participants will come away with an Action Plan Learning Log to help them keep a record of their own learning journey. These action plans are a learner’s commitment to use what they have learned in their own work environment.

Agenda 9:30 to 4:00 pm, includes 1 hour for lunch, two 15 minute breaks

9:00 – 9:30 am Registration and light continental breakfast

9:30-10:30 am– Introduction to Emotional Intelligence including:

  • The work of Daniel Goleman, Ph.D.
  • What is Emotional Intelligence – What is not Emotional Intelligence
  • Emotional Intelligence – Self Assessment
  • IQ (Intelligence Quotient) vs. EQ (Emotional Quotient)
  • Brain Science of Emotional Hijacking

10:30 – 10:45 am Break

10:45 – 12:10 pm- Didactic presentation on social competence and personal competence, including the five essential competencies of Emotional Intelligence, and Process of Self-Awareness, Self-Regulation, Self-Motivation and Empathy

12:10 – 1:10 pm- Lunch (on your own)

1:10 – 2:45 pm– Presentation continues with exercises relating to the five essential competencies of EI

2:45 – 3:00 pm Break

3:00 – 4:00 pm EI Toolkit & discussion of best practices, action plan, evaluations, and wrap up:

  • How does Emotional Intelligence shape the way we interact with others?
  • Toolkit – using EI competencies to:
  • Analyze your thinking
  • Connect and communicate with others
  • Understand emotion and conflict resolution
  • Use energy and enthusiasm to motivate others
  • Review Action Plan Learning Log - The action plan is the learner’s written commitment to use what they have learned.

About the Speaker: JacquelineTusman,M.S.is an experienced professional with a comprehensive background in career coaching, leadership coaching, training, organization development, and academic teaching. Jaci has served as a Coach, Manager and Senior Learning Consultant in organizational development and training for Almac Clinical Services (a pharmaceutical company), Thomas Jefferson University and Hospitals, and the University of Pennsylvania.

At the University of Pennsylvania, Jaci took a leading role in working with all levels of staff in career coaching. In addition, she was part of a design team responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive career-coaching curriculum for Penn’s career coach training, and directed a yearly one-day career workshop for Penn employees. In developing her own career coaching business, Jaci has coached individuals who want to change the course of their career and reach their highest career potential.

Jaci is a graduate of the University of the Arts, has a Master’s Degree in Training and Organization Development from St. Joseph’s University, and holds both Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI®) and Life Orientations (LIFO®) certifications. She is also a member of the Association of Career Professionals.
