Emerging Ministries Grants

Board of Global Ministries

Purpose: To assist local churches of the Rocky Mountain Conference of the United Methodist Church to develop new ministries or to facilitate the development of new ministry ideas for mission, outreach and education with the poor and/or the underprivileged. Ministry with the poor and underprivileged is an imperative that Jesus set down for us. This ministry includes both acts of mercy and acts of justice. These grants are intended to not only relieve immediate, but also to work on systemic problems that deal with the injustices.

Who Can Apply: Local churches of the Rocky Mountain Conference. Proposals may be submitted by clergy or lay leaders, and must have at least one pastoral signature and one lay member/leader signature.

Deadline: Nov.30, 2015

Amount: Grants will be awarded in the range of $250-$1,000

Funding Priorities: The primary purpose of these grants is to facilitate new ideas for ministries in local churches and in communities supported by our conference. Within that scope, grants may be made for ministries that address:

  • Clean Water
  • Climate Change
  • Education
  • Health
  • Homelessness
  • Hunger
  • Job Skills
  • Literacy
  • Sanitation

This is not an exhaustive list; other topics may also be considered.

Criteria:

  1. Fit: The degree to which the proposed project focuses on new and emerging ministries within the local church and community.
  2. Impact: Description of need; degree to which the proposal clearly identifies goals and describes the process for measuring outcomes, for both the church and the local community.
  3. Ownership: Demonstration of both lay and clergy leadership buy-in to carry out the proposed ministry. Sustainability of this ministry will be looked at. How will your church continue to carry out this ministry after this grant money has been used?
  4. Innovation: How new, creative, or replicable is the ministry in your community? The emphasis for these grants will be on new ministries in your local church or community that haven’t been tried before.

Timeline & Reporting: Grantees will be notified before 2015 year end. Funds will be dispersed before year end. Funds must be spent and reports submitted to Conference Board of Global Ministries between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2016.

Application Questions:

  1. Describe the new and emerging ministry that your church is hoping to facilitate. What is already in place? What would be created as new? Whom will you be impacting with this ministry?
  2. Who will be in charge of implementing this project? What is their role and level of experience with this type of ministry?
  3. What is the role of the local church? Who else will be involved? What plans do you have to ensure accountability and support?
  4. Describe the need and expected impact for this project. What are your goals and expected measurable outcomes? (How will you know you have succeeded?)
  5. What is your expected timeline for this ministry?
  6. Describe or attach a budget for the proposed ministry, including all anticipated sources of income and expenses. This is a one-time only grant. Your budget must show that your church is also invested in this ministry financially.
  7. Attach 2 one-page letters of support from church members and/or community partners.
