EAST Magazine 2015-16 Application Process

EAST Magazine is the University of Leeds East Asian Studies Department’s own student-run publication. Its content covers anything and everything to do with East Asia, however the dedicated team that produce it changes each year, and so the time has come for us to find a new EAST Magazine team.
The team members can come from within any department of the university. To ensure that motivated, creative individuals work on next year’s magazine, the current committee will be personally selecting the new team. We hope that a group of enthusiastic and dedicated students will make it even more of a success than it has been this year, and find it as rewarding a project as we have.

The magazine allows considerable scope for you to put your own stamp on it, in terms of design and content. In 2013, we published online for the first time, dramatically increased our funding and stepped up our social media presence. These initiatives continued through 2014/15, and we evolved to produce two, lighter issues per year, as well a bi-monthly newsletter. We hope that the new committee will continue in this vein and take the magazine from strength to strength.

EAST Magazine has enjoyed international repute, with our renowned readership including Snow Flower and the Secret Fan author Lisa See, The Joy Luck Club author Amy Tan, publishers Penguin Books China, plus of course our numerous students both past and present of Leeds East Asian Studies.

If you wish to become part of the next stage of EAST Magazine’s exciting future, please submit a brief cover letter to by Sunday 17th May 2015. Please briefly outline the position you are applying for and why, any relevant skills and experience you already have, and any future ideas you have for the magazine.

In the meantime, you can check out our Winter 2014/15 edition online ( which was the first issue to contain sections in East-Asian languages, and keep an eye out for our Summer 2015 issue due this coming June, featuring insight into Thailand’s LGBT community, commentary on China’s urban sprawl, opinion on WWII’s “comfort women” and much more.

Thank you for your interest, and good luck!
