6. BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK:

6.1 NEED FOR THE STUDY:

Rasa is an Indriyartha of Jihva. and the taste which is perceived by an individual is itself its characteristic feature1.The Rasa is perceived immediately on consumption of the Dravya and remains stable even in its dry state2. There are Six individual Rasas3,4. Among them Tikta Rasa, being non- tasty itself when consumed will not allow to perceive other Rasas5.Based on the Gunas of Tikta Rasa such as Ruksha, Sheeta, Laghu it possess the Dosha Karma as PittaKapha Shamaka and Vata Vardhaka. The Dhatu Karma of Tikta Rasa are Krimighna, Jvaraghna, Dipana, Pachana, Meda, Vasa, Majja, Lasika, Puyasveda, Mutra, Mala Shoshaka etc.

Thesum of the anabolic and catabolic processes of the body involved in the synthesis and breakdown of Carbohydrates principally glucose, fructose and galactose. Disorders ofCarbohydrate metabolism occur in many forms such as Diabetes, Hypoglycemia. The Tikta Rasa with its properties plays its role in the Carbohydrate metabolism. Many Tikta Rasa Dravyas are prescribed in controlling the Blood glucose level.

The below mentioned Tikta Rasa Dravyas though endowed with similar Gunas possess different active principle. The dravya Karavellaka contains polypeptide-pas active principle and definitely shows its effect on Blood sugar whereas Kalamegha having Andrographaloides,Andrographisidehaving the identical Gunas, possess different active principles.

The present study is designed with the objective to evaluate the role of Tikta Rasa Dravyas(Karavellaka and Kalamegha) in Carbohydrate metabolism and Blood Glucose level.

6.2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE:

According to Charaka, Rasa itself is Guna, it won’t posseses other qualities. So the qualities of Dravya itself.6Qualities of Tikta rasa are Ruksha, Shita, Laghu.7Based on aggravating action on Dosha, the Tikta Rasa is Vata kopaka.8 Depending upon the alleviating action the Dosha, Tikta Rasa is Pitta Shamaka.9When it is taken more in quantity it causes rukshatwa, Kharatwa, by its Vishada properties it causes Shoshana of the Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Meda,Asthi, Majja and Shukra. The Srotas become Kharata. Decreases the Bala, causes Krushta, Harshanashaka and effects over the face and also causes the Vatavyadhis.10

According to Kashyapa, Tikta Rasa Dravya should be used as it relieves Mukha Madhuryata and dries up the Kapha.11

Charaka describing the importance of wholesome food, describes that the effect of such diets and drinks can be perceived directly, as they provide fuel to the fire of digestion, promote mental as well as physical strength of tissue elements. Describing the digestive power, Charaka further explains the strength, health, longetivity and vital breath are dependent upon the power of digestion including metabolism. When supplied with the fuel in the form of food and drinks, this power of digestion is sustained and when deprived of it.12

Glucose is the precursor for synthesis of all sugars required in all metabolic processes. An understanding of metabolism of glucose forms the core of study of carbohydrate metabolism.13

Karavellaka possessing the Tikta rasa, Katu Vipaka, Sheeta Veerya, Lagu Ruksha Guna14.This constitutes polypeptide-p helps in maintaining the blood glucose level.15

Kalamegha possessing the Tikta rasa, Katu Vipaka, Sheeta Veerya, Lagu Ruksha Guna.16 This contains Andrographaloides,Andrographiside. But this does not have any role in blood glucose level.17

6.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES:

  • The study the effect of Tikta Rasa on carbohydrate metabolism.
  • To evaluate the change in blood glucose level by administering Tikta Rasa Dravyas.

7.MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Persons who are healthy individuals are taken for the study.

7.1SOURCE OF DATA:

The people who are working in SDM college and hospital and students are also taken for the study.

INCLUSION CRITERIA

  1. Age from 20 to 50 years.

EXCLUSION CRITERIA:

  1. Individuals with any metabolicdiseases like obesity, diabetes, hypertension.
  2. Persons who are taking regular medications are excluded from the study.

Plan for study: The subject who will be fulfilling the inclusion criteria will be divided into three groups.

The Group A (Control group) consists of 10 subjects and their FBS is noted. After noting the FBS, 75gms glucose is given andblood sugar level is checked after 1 hour and 2 hours.

The Group B (Karavellaka group) consists of 10 subjects and their FBS is noted. After taking FBS, 75gms glucose is given, followed by Swarasa of Karavellaka(25ml) is given. And their blood sugar level is checked after a period of 1 hour and 2 hour.

The Group C(Kalamegha group) consists of 10 subjects and their FBS is noted. After taking FBS, 75 gms glucose is given, followed by Swarasa of Kalamegha (25ml) is given. And their blood sugar level is checked after a period of 1 hour and 2 hour.

The results will be compared statistically to assess whether Tikta Rasa dravyas have any effect on carbohydrate metabolism especially on blood glucose levels.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

Blood glucose level

ObjectiveParameter:

Blood glucose level will beassesed before giving the Swarasa and after giving the Swarasa.

7.3 DOES THE STUDY REQUIRE ANY INVESTIGATION OR INVESTIGATIONS TO BE CONDUCTED ON PATIENTS OR OTHER HUMANS OR ANIMALS IF SO, PLEASE DESCRIBE BRIEFLY.

YES

Blood glucose level will be carried out for the subjects.

7.4 HAS ETHICAL CLEARANCE BEEN OBTAINED FROM YOUR INSTITUTION?

YES.
