Dear Earl Nance Sr. Families,

Welcome back to an exciting 2015 – 2016 school year at Earl Nance, Sr. Elementary School! I know that this year will be full of student successes and academic achievement. The staff is thrilled that you have entrusted your children’s education to us. We will make every effort to help your child achieve academically and socially this year. It is our goal to create an enriched learning environment that engages each student. Of course, as the first teacher in your child’s life, we need and welcome your support and cooperation. Nance Elementary has an excellent teaching staff with a wealth of knowledge. We also have outstanding support staff members who work in different capacities to support your child’s learning.

The school will continue the implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) this year. PBIS is designed to focus on positive behaviors resulting in a decrease of inappropriate behaviors. The entire school will speak a universal language. I am certain that PBIS will help to create a culture of respect and learning at Nance Elementary. Additional information on PBIS will be sent home throughout the school year. Each student will receive a daily communicator folder which will have a behavior calendar and other pertinent information within it so be on the lookout for your student’s daily communicator folder. Feel free to write back with questions, suggestions, or concerns. We also encourage you to become active in our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) as a way of having your voice heard.

Here is some important information concerning your student and our school.

School Hours: Starting time is 8:25am. Students will not be allowed to enter classrooms before 8:25am. Breakfast is served in the cafeteria from 7:55am until 8:15am. Consequences for excessive tardiness are listed in the SLPS Code of Conduct booklet. Students are dismissed beginning at 3:22pm. Instructional minutes are very precious so we ask that tardiness and early dismissals be held to a minimum. In the event an early dismissal is necessary we ask that you pick your child up prior to 2:45pm.

Parents at Arrival and Dismissal: As the school year begins, we are working to help students develop independence and a school routine. We ask that parents leave their children at the school entry doors. This helps children and also helps us with safety and security. All doors are locked after the 8:25am bell. Walkers, car riders and daycare van riders will be dismissed in front of the school. We closely monitor visitors to the building and ask that all visitors/volunteers check in at the office and wear a badge while in the building. Someone who goes directly to a classroom will be considered an intruder. Please report directly to the main office anytime you enter the building.

Uniform Policy: Earl Nance Sr. Elementary is a uniform school. Strict adherence to the uniform policy is required. Students are required to wear forest green, navy or white tops along with navy or khaki bottoms. Clothing/accessories that are not acceptable at any time are oversized or undersized clothing; hats, caps, berets, wave caps, scarves, or bandannas worn in the building; no belt chains hooked to wallets, keys, etc.; no outer jackets or coats worn during school; no visible labels are permitted on any piece of clothing; no sandals and/or flip-flops. Exceptions to wearing the uniform are permitted when: 1) School Picture Days and/or 2) Specially Announced by Office. Students who chronically abuse the uniform policy will be considered insubordinate and will be handled as such according to the St. Louis Public School District Code of Conduct.

Absence from School: We request that parents call school to inform us if their child is going to be absent. According to School District Policy, some absences may be designated excused/unexcused based on the reason for the absence.

Medication and Immunizations: Medication cannot be administered by school personnel unless permission forms, available from the school nurse, have been completed and returned to the school office along with the prescription bottle and a note from a physician and parent requesting that Nance Elementary staff administer the medication per the prescription label. Please include information as to when dosage is to be administered. No student is to have medication for self-administration. ALL MEDICATIONS MUST BE DELIVERED TO SCHOOL BY A PARENT OR RESPONSIBLE ADULT. All students enrolled in school must meet the state requirements for immunizations. Medical examination information will be checked and all children who are not properly immunized will be excluded from school until the requirements are met.

Finally, if your child needs additional support or if you have a concern, please do not hesitate to contact his/her teacher. It is our mission to support your child in whatever way we can. Working together makes a difference in the lives of our students.

Please review the Parent Student Handbook and the Student Code of Conduct Handbook in their entirety. Thank you for your support and welcome to the new school year. It’s going to be a great journey together!
