Dr. Sam Bauman, Ph.D.

Sam Bauman, Ph.D. is the Chief Operating Officer for Walden Sierra Inc., a premier behavioral health organization serving Southern Maryland. These services are provided at four locations and at the County Detention Center.

Dr. Bauman is also an Independent Contractor working with US Care, DC Department of Disability Services and Grafton Integrated Health Network (GIHN). His work with these companies is in the areas of organizational development, clinical assessment, dually diagnosed clients, trauma informed care, program and clinical consultation, treatment planning, training, and technical assistance.

He has recently served as the Clinical Director at GIHN and as the Director of ACT Services at Community Connections, DC. Dr. Bauman has over thirty years’ experience in executive management of juvenile justice, substance abuse treatment, behavioral health and human service agencies. He has developed and implemented programs for wrap-around youth and family services, school-based behavioral health services, primary prevention family strengthening services, rehabilitation services, domestic violence treatment, homeless case management, crisis intervention, jail based substance abuse treatment, and dual diagnosis services.

Dr. Bauman has extensive experience as a trainer, and has designed and conducted workshops on trauma informed care, strengths-based family services, motivational interviewing, crisis intervention, human sex trafficking, multi-cultural awareness, burnout prevention, logical consequences, listening and counseling skills, values clarification, suicide prevention, group dynamics, assessment and treatment of domestic violence, habits of effective people, and employee motivation.

Dr. Bauman is the recipient of multiple awards for distinguished service including: the Maryland Association of Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Programs 1988 Project of the Year for Youth Rehabilitation, the Mental Health Association of Charles County Outstanding Community Service Award, 1995 for youth and families; The Maryland Senate Official Citation for Service with Youth and Families, Friends of the Family Award, 2000 from Friends of the Family, MD for his development of family programs, and the Outstanding Employee Service Award, 2005 & 2006 from the City ofAlexandriafor excellence in program development.

Dr. Bauman’s thesis focused on the effects of coordinated community mental health. His dissertation focused on resources and stress associated with raising a child with a disability. Dr. Bauman lives inMarylandwith his wife Terri, a professional musician and their three children, Jason, Hannah and Molly.
