The Board of Studies meeting was opened up with the welcome note. Dr.M.Selvaraj welcomed all the BOS members and the Special Invitees.

The minutes of the previous Board of studies meeting was briefed by the ChairmanDr.Chetan Bajaj. The major focus was on the innovative practices which have been adopted in Curriculum,Teaching Pedagogy, Continuous Assessment Tests and Examination Pattern.The Chairman summarised the discussion during1stBOS meeting in the form of Diamond model, comprising of Einsten’s Corner, Tendulkar’s Corner, Micheal Angelo’s Corner and Sherlock Homes Corner.Broadly, these corners reflect our strategy of aligning with Industry to make our examination (evaluation) system, teaching pedagogy and curriculum in line with industry requirements.

Continuous Assessment:

Continuous Assessment enables students to be on their toes from day 1, get immediate feedback and help measure skills required by industry.

Curriculum:

To stay on the cutting edge the focus will be on launching Super-Specializations in emerging areas, floating state of art courses and regular updation of syllabus through continuous research and association with the Industry.

Discussion on Elective Subjects for Third Semester

As our students of 2010 batch are moving to the third semester,Dr.Selvaraj presented the list of specializations and the subjects. The different specializationwhich will be offered to the students are Marketing, Human Resources, Finance, Production and Systems. The detailed discussion and suggestions from BOS members on each specialization are listed below.

  • MARKETING - Mr. J. Raghunathan and Dr. Suresh Kumar suggested thatInternet marketing could be included as a separate subject or it could be included as a part in Integrated Marketing Communications.Dr. Suresh Kumar also said that a list of 8 electives can be offeredand students can prefer their own choice. viz., International Marketing, Brand Management and Sales and Distribution Management.
  • HUMAN RESOURCE - Mr. Ragunathan and Dr. Suresh Kumar proposed to offer Knowledge Management as one of the elective since more number of students hadchosen HR as their specialization and they will benefit from this subject. The current scenario for HR placement is mainly in Consultancy firm, where their main role is to recruit and select, hence,it has been suggested to offer Recruitment and Selection electives for third semester and Knowledge Management in the Final semester.
  • FINANCE - Dr.Akilesh suggested few subjects such as Credit Syndication, Private Equity Placements, ESCRO Mechanism, Indian Capital Management. The subject Banking and Insurance can be separated and offered as two different subjects. Then keeping Internships and Placements in mind, it was discussed that MFSI and IRM could be offered in the third semester.
  • Similarly Dr.Akilesh also commented that electives in PRODUCTIONspecialization are good but there should be some tie-up with the industries to get some input.
  • With respect to the SYSTEMSspecialization Mr.Ragunathan said that the courses can be oriented to the functions of management.

The subjects under each specialization have been designed in such a way thatall the students should be able to get the Internship and the placement offers easily.The members suggested that we offer five subjects under each specialisation in fourth semester from which the student can choose any 3, if the number of students opting is not less than 20 in each subject.

Question Paper Pattern

Our Question Paper pattern is aligned with Industry requirement to test the Problem Solving, Applications Orientation, Team Work etc. Thus our examination pattern will be close to Performance Appraisal System in Industry. Our teaching is aligned with our continuous Assessment and examination Pattern.

It was decided that we will continue with the above Question paper pattern followed in the first Semester and also follow the Teaching Pedagogywhich is aligned with the Question Paper Pattern.We willalso continue to follow session durationof 1 hour 15 minutes.

However, changes have been incorporated in External Exam Pattern particularly in Part B and Part C.

Internship for Semester Pattern

The members appreciated and acceptedthe Change of Internship schedulein the month of September to December, as it is easy to get Pre-Placement offers during that period.Also when the students are in the final semester they can be on campus, and attend the campus interviews which are generally conducted betweenJanuary and April.

TRIMESTER SYSTEM

  • It was decided that Trimester System be adopted for students entering in 2011 batch, in line with approach of Premier B-Schools. Trimester enables more flexibility& better distribution of syllabus and enables a broaden coverage of a variety of topics/subject.
  • The list of subjects for Trimester pattern was displayed,Dr. A.Lakshmi said that Practical papers like Business communication,Business Applications and skill development courses could be offered to the students in the first year (ie. first three trimesters). It was also suggested that someanalytical courses could be given as Tutorial Sessions for the students. As we have allotted one full trimester for the Internship, the credit points should be increased to 21.
  • With reference to the Question Paper pattern it was discussed that the same pattern could be followed but the re-test for the internal tests and the re-quiz for the quiz should not be conducted for the absentees, as the quizzesmay be conducted on an announced date. And the students who do not get the minimum marks may fail in the Internal Assessment Examinations.

The meeting concluded with the suggestions of Dr. Akhilesh on the following areas.

  • To have more contacts with the industry people we could take part in the HRD Networking at Bangalore and papers could be sent on the topic “Recent Trends in HR” and publish it in the HR conclave.
  • Be a member in the “Academy of Management” to acquire more Insights and also lots of learning should happen through Indian Epics.
  • Faculty Exchange Programme could be done through Network of International Business and Economic School (NIBES).
