6:00 – 6:45 pm The Perspective of Simplicity (Guest Speaker)

Show and Tell: Group examines and discusses the simplicity or complexity of a variety of household items.

6:45 – 7:00 pm Set up ice breaker table exercises.

Each participant will be given one of two pages of quotes about simplicity, marked Table A and Table B. Before dinner, participants will be asked to select one or two as their favorites to be discussed over dinner. All Table A’s will sit together at dinner, as will the Table B’s. At dinner, the participants will discuss why they picked their quote. As a table they will then pick a spokesperson and one quote to be shared with the whole group. The spokesperson will explain the quote and describe why they chose it to the whole group for 5 mins at the end of dinner.

8:30 – 9:00 am What is Simplicity?

(Goal: Develop a vocabulary of simplification/complexity. Develop a classification system for deciding simple/complex. Develop a methodology for making the complex simple.)

What is Simple? [Group to define characteristics of simplicity]

9:00 - 10:00 am Achieving Simplification.

Group discussion on how to make complex things simple.

Make it Simple. [Divide group in half and move to opposite ends of table. Each given a complex item. Develop a plan to make it simple. Report back.

10:00 – 10:30 am Break

10:30 – 11:45 pm Complexity/Simplicity in Healthcare

(Goal: Use the vocabulary and classification from above to categorize interactions with the healthcare system. Identify complexity in the healthcare system)

Personal observations and group discussion on what is simple and complex in healthcare.

Revisit Characteristics of Simplicity following discussion to see if they need to be amended.

11:45 – 12:15 pm Complexity in Healthcare

(Goal: Identify 5 - 10 complex interactions in healthcare for the afternoon exercises)

12:15 – 12:30 pm Guest Speaker

12:30 – 1:30 pm Lunch

1:30 - 2:30 pm Making Healthcare Simple I

(Goal: Provide initial innovative ideas for simplification across healthcare technologies, processes, interactions)

Breakouts of 5 people to consider all of the complex interactions identified previously. Can address them all or just a subset. Can add new interactions. Breakouts to brainstorm on ways to simplify the interactions. Breakouts will elect spokesperson(s) to present their ideas for full group discussion.

2:30 - 3:30 pm Making Healthcare Simple II

(Goal: Communication of breakout ideas to rest of group. Selection of target ideas for subsequent exercise)

Spokespeople will present simplification ideas to the whole group for discussion and evaluation. Group to vote at end on top 2 or 3.

3:30 - 4:00 pm Break

4:00 - 4:45 pm Making Healthcare Simple III

(Goal: Further development of top ideas)

Newly formed breakouts (different participants from exercise above) will each consider one of the top ideas and suggest ways to simplify it further. Elect spokesperson for presentation.

4:45 - 5:20 pm Making Healthcare Simple IV

(Goal: Communication of breakout ideas to rest of group. Summary of simplification ideas)

Spokespeople will present breakout results to whole group for discussion and evaluation.

5:20 - 5:30 pm Summary and Closing
