Teacher Explains Task

We will be learning about compound words. Compound words are when you have two smaller words that are put together to make a brand new word. Sometimes when you are reading, you will see compound words and it is important to know that the compound word often has a different meaning than the two smaller words that it is made from.

Teacher Models Task

Teacher will show the student two word cards. One card will say side and the other card will say walk. She will model how to read the cards one at a time and then put them together to create a new compound word. Repeat with other pre-made cards.

Teacher and Students Practice Task Together

Student will be practicing along with the PowerPoint presentation. As each word is described in the presentation, the teacher and student will practice putting that word together and breaking it apart together. The teacher and student will take turns using the two words for each compound word example and read them separately and then putting them together and reading the new word.

For example: Teacher will read the card that says rain and then read the card that says bow. Then, she will put the two cards together and read it as rainbow. Then, the student will read the card that says pan and then read the card that says cake. Then, she will put the two cards together and read it as pancake. Continue this process through the entire PowerPoint presentation.

Students Practice Task

Student will cut out the words from the last page and read all of the cards aloud. Then, the student will read one card at a time and match it with a second word that will create a compound word. Then, the student will write the compound word on the piece of paper. Have the student continue this for all of the words. Teacher will observe and assist as needed.

Independent Practice

Student will cut out the words from the following page and read all of the cards aloud. Then, the student will read one card at a time and match it with a second word that will create a compound word. Then, the student will write the compound word on the piece of paper. Have the student continue this practice independently until all of the words have been created and written.
