Job Purpose: / The successful candidate will join a dynamic and thriving Classics department staffed byeleven teachers.
The department will be moving into a purpose designed teaching block next term. All teaching roomswill have interactive whiteboards and acomputer suitewill beavailable for use by members of the department. There is a Classics staff office which provides teachers with space and resources for planning.
The School and its senior management are strongly supportive of Classics. Latin is taught from year 7, Classical Greek from year 8, and Classical Civilisation from year 9. All three are available at A-level, with Latin, Greek and Classical Studies also offered as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Outside the timetable, the department runs regular trips and visits, organises visiting speakers and activities for junior and senior Classicists. Additional support is provided for students applying to Oxbridge, and advice given to all students applying for Classical subjects at university.
The role involves teaching Classicsthroughout the School.The successful candidate will be expected to inspire and engage pupils with the outstanding quality of his/her teaching and the individualised support offered outside the classroom. Furthermore, all teaching staff are expected to take a full part in the wider life of the School through extracurricular involvement.
Key responsibility/Accountability
Specific responsibilities include:
- To create a positive, supportive and productive working environment for pupils.
- To assess, record, and report on the development, progress and attainment of pupils
- To contribute to departmental schemes of work
- To help develop pupils as critical thinkers and independent learners
- To actively promote the study of Classical subjects at School level and beyond.
- To demonstrate an intrinsic fascination with the Classical world that is communicated effectively and shared generously with pupils and colleagues.
- To work collaboratively in order to share ideas, resources and information with colleagues within the department.
- To assist with the organising and running of a wide variety of cultural trips and study visits undertaken by the Classics Department.
- To act as a role model in all aspects of School life, both in the classroom and beyond.
- To actively share and support the pastoral wellbeing of the student body.
- To promote the general progress and well-being of individual students and of any assigned group of students, including tutor groups.
- To safeguard the general health and safety of students.
- To communicate and consult with parents and any relevant outside bodies or agencies.
- To participate in all relevant meetings.
- To undertake supervision and cover duties as required.
- To contribute to other aspects of education outside the classroom e.g. games, clubs & visits.
Person Specification
The successful candidate will be deeply committed to the success of every pupil whom he or she teaches. He or she will deliver excellent teaching, have an appropriate degree and hold a PGCE or equivalent qualification. It is expected that they will be able to teach Classical Civilisation & Latinto A-level/IB standard; the ability to teach Ancient Greek is desirable but not essential
We are looking for someone who has a demonstrable enthusiasm for Classicsand the post would be suitable for either an experienced teacher or someone early in their career. Extensive opportunities for professional development are available.
