Hiring Criteria

Elementary School Principal

The successful candidate will have the following qualities:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Illinois Administrative Endorsement required.
  • Administrative experience required, elementary experience preferred.
  • Experience opening a new school preferred.
  • Proven experience establishing high-achieving academics within apositive school culture.

Preferred Competencies

  • Understandsthe elementary child and what is developmentally appropriate.
  • Knowledgeableof best practices in elementary curriculum & instruction, especially Rigby & Harcourt math, special education, gifted, RtI, early literacy skills, assessment.
  • Understands professional learning communities and continuous improvement andcan apply PLC processes & tools.
  • Knowledgeable of applicable school law.
  • Knowledgeableof 21st century learning skills.
  • Possesses excellentcommunication skills, especially interpersonal communication and conflict resolution.
  • Skilled at planning, organization, and budgeting and facility management.
  • Embraces lifelong learning and is able to serve as a model for professional development for staff.
  • Works well with schoolcommunity, understanding balance of stakeholder desires and practical abilities.
  • Skilled facilitator and problem solver.
  • Skilled at analyzing and interpreting data and applying the conclusions.
  • Utilizes technologically to enhance instruction.
  • Student centered, visible, approachable and enthusiastic.
  • Able to establish and work within a collaborative, team-centered environment.
  • Clearly sets and communicates direction.
  • Proactive and flexible, able to foster a positive culture while making difficult decisions.
  • Understands the District’s strategic direction, embracing thevision, mission, and goals.
  • Serves as a guide and mentor, providing constructive feedback and utilizingindividual strengths.
  • Able to apply student discipline in a fair and balanced manner.
  • Familiar with Dunlap district, culture, and resources.

Working conditions

  • Mental Demands: calculating, comparing, evaluation, interpreting, organizing, consulting, analyzing, planning, documenting, specifying, coordinating, implementing, and presenting.
  • Physical Demands: bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting for prolonged periods of time, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity, ability to read and write, ability to speak and understand the English language. Must be able to lift an individual student.
  • Environmental Conditions: The work is performed primarily indoors; however, outside work is required on occasion. Travel between buildings is a requirement.

No single Preferred Competency should be considered more desirable than any other, though nothing precludes the Administration from utilizing the Preferred Competencies in that manner. Any aspect of this document may be amended by the Administration at anytime.
