My child has little English. How will they cope in an English speaking environment?

Through immersion our experience is that children quickly pick up English.

Where can my child stay in New Zealand?

All international students must live in one of the following types of accommodation:

1.  With their parents or legal guardians (proof of legal guardianship must be supplied).

2.  In a homestay approved by the school. An indemnity must be signed by parents giving the homestay parents (designated caregiver) authority to act on behalf of your child.

How much does it cost to stay in a homestay?

Homestay costs $40 per night or $280. This is paid to our school in bulk at the beginning of the stay. The school will pay the homestay parents and monitor the conditions in the homestay.

What Medical and Travel Insurance will my child need?

International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand.

Students must provide evidence of medical and travel insurance on enrolment. The insurance must cover the full length of the time spent studying in New Zealand. Insurance cover provided by New Zealand companies only will be accepted. We recommend either Southern Cross or Unicare. Unicare has a premium of $615.00 per annum with an excess for stipulated personal effects. This policy covers health, fee protection, personal effects and travel.

The school will keep a record of the Insurance Policy number and the type of cover provided.

Are there Non-Compulsory Costs?

The cost of the school camp in February is covered by the tuition fee but your child also has the opportunity to attend additional EOTC trips (time of year dependent). Each of these costs approx. NZ$400.00

What are the visa requirements for study in New Zealand?

Students studying for one term of ten weeks may do so on a visitor’s visa which allows them to stay for three months. For a longer period the student will need a student visa. This allows the student to study in New Zealand for one year.

Full details of visa requirements while studying in New Zealand are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed on their website at http://www.immigration.govt.nz

To obtain a student visa you will need a letter of acceptance for enrolment at our school and a receipt for the school fees that have been paid.

What is an Intermediate School?

This is a two-year middle school between primary and secondary schools. We accept students aged between 10 and 13. The transition age to adolescence marks one of the most significant stages in human development. These ‘middle years’ are a crucial time when the child has specific developmental needs.

South Wellington Intermediate School provides a learning environment that is dedicated solely to the special needs of this group. All of our school’s resources and the school organisation are focused on the needs of the emerging adolescent.
