WHO JESUS CHRIST IS

Hebrews 1:1-2:18

Key Verse: 1:3b

* JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD (1:1-2:4)

  1. What does the writer tell us in verses 1-4 about Jesus? (Who is he? Where is he? What did he do? What does he do now?) [Jn 1:3; Rev 1:8]
  1. What do verses 4-14 tell us about angels? (Ex 3:2; Nu 20:16; Ge 18, 22:11; 24:7; Lk 1:34-35,37) In what respects is Jesus superior to angels? What Scriptures prove that the Messiah is not an angel, but is far superior to angels?
  1. Why must we pay careful attention to what God has spoken to us? What do “pay more careful attention” and “do not drift away” mean?
  1. What was the message spoken by angels? (Ac 7:53) What is it that we have heard? (2:1) Why can we not ignore such a great salvation?

* JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF MAN (2:5-18)

  1. What is the main point of Psalm 8:4-6? Why did God make Jesus a little lower than the angels? (9)
  1. What does it mean that Jesus, made little lower than the angels, was crowned with glory and honor? Why did God do this? (9-10) What does “he might taste death for everyone” mean?
  1. How did God, the Sovereign Creator, choose to bring many sons to glory? (10-11) Who is the author of our salvation? How did he become the author of our salvation?
  1. Why did Jesus become like our brother? (11-12, 17-18) What did he do as our high priest? Why is Jesus uniquely qualified to help us when we are tempted and weak?
  1. Why was it necessary for Jesus to share in our humanity? (14-16) What was the nature of our slavery? How does his death give us real freedom?
