OVERVIEW:
This month we are going to be reading William Shakespeare's playThe Taming of Shrew, a comedy. Since this may be the first time you've ever read Shakespeare, we will be gaining some background knowledge first by using a web quest! You are going to browse the sites listed, and use the information you learn to create a newspaper that would have appeared during Shakespeare's time.
You are a newspaper reporter assigned to review the current production of the Shakespearean play The Taming of the Shrew. Prizes will be awarded for the best article and most creative newspaper. You will work in pairs to create a newspaper layout. Your specific requirements are listed below. Good luck!
Here are Your Requirements (each person must have)
- Feature Article on The Taming of the Shrew, the Play (major essay)
- At Least 5 Pictures Total of the Following Things:
- 1. Shakespeare
- 2. Taming of the Shrew
- 3. Your secondary article topic
- 1 Secondary Article About the Time Period of Shakespeare’s Life

- 2 or more of the Following Extra Things:
-advertisements (clothing store, acting lessons @ The Globe, poetry contest, etc) relevant to time period
-cartoons/comics (10 box minimum) with content relevant to time period
-crossword puzzles/word search (10 word minimum) relevant to Shakespeare
-Perfume sample of Queen Elizabeth’s perfume.
-Play tickets: be specific: what play, where & when- time, date, what row and seat. Or: “Buy a wig at Willie’s Wig Shoppe, and get a free ticket with info listed above on ticket.
-Where’s Waldo, only Where’s Shakespeare with detailed picture like Globe Theater or the town of London.
-Flyer for an upcoming play
- Poem (Sonnet) representing a relevant theme from the play. (We will discuss in class)
- Must have creative & relevant title for newspaper & newspaper design must look like a newspaper and resemble something of the time period (16th/17th century or 1564-1616) !!!
FEATURE ARTICLE:
The topic of your feature article must be on the play, The Taming of the Shrew. More details to come…
Poem:
- Must be a sonnet using a relevant theme from the play, The Taming of the Shrew
OPTIONS FOR TOPIC OF SECONDARY ARTICLE:
- Shakespeare’s life (or parts of it)
- Shakespearean language
- Elizabethan Society
- Clothing of the time period
- The Globe Theater and its history
- Staging and scenery in the play or other plays of the time
- Queen Elizabeth I
- Marriage and /or the roles of men and women
**This article must be 3 paragraphs long and discuss the most important aspects of the topic you choose above.
**Use of 5 vocab words used correctly from any list this year.
