September Bible verse: And God said, “I will be with you”, Exodus 3:12

September’s B.I.G. Theme: God Chooses Us

Welcome, introduce story of Samuel (boy who was servant of God and worked w/Eli in the Tabernacle, a special place where people worship God) and the theme “God Chooses Us”.

That sounds familiar. We talked about that in VBS this past summer. What does it mean? Is it like being chosen for a soccer team? No, God chooses to us follow him. Let’s watch our puppet show and find out about today’s story of Samuel in the Tabernacle, and how he learned to follow God.

Samuel: (sleeping, snoring loudly)

Voice of God: “Samuel. Samuel”.

Samuel: (waking up) “Huh, what? Eli, is that you?”

Eli: (wakes up) “It is it not me, Samuel. Go back to sleep”. (goes back to sleep)

Samuel: (falls back asleep, snoring)

Voice of God: “Samuel. Samuel”.

Samuel: “Eli, did you call me. What do you need?”.

Eli: (wakes up again) “It was not me, Samuel. Go back to sleep.” (goes back to sleep)

Samuel: “uh, OK.”

Voice of God: “Samuel. Samuel, are you listening?”

Samuel: “What? Who is that? Eli are you calling me?”

Eli: (waking up) “Samuel, it is not me. It is God calling you. When you hear him again, tell him you are listening”.

Voice of God: “Samuel. Samuel”.

Samuel: “Yes, God. Your servant is listening.”

Samuel and Eli fade off to the side as Whiskers appears in the middle.

Whiskers: (appearing) “Boys and girls, our story today tells about how Samuel learned to listen for God’s voice. After that night God called to Samuel many times and Samuel always listened and obeyed. Samuel shared God’s messages with all the people and they learned to trust him as one of God’s followers. We can all be followers too if we listen to God.

Boys and girls, we may not hear God calling us in the middle of the night like Samuel did, but what are things we can do to show God we are listening to his word? There are some things you can’t do because you are not big enough? (drive a car, walk to a friend’s house by yourself, make your own dinner, help your big brother or sister w/his homework). But there are lots of things you can do to help others. Let’s talk about some things we can’t do yet and some things we can do.

Direct the choir -> sing

Light a candle at the altar – say a prayer

Write a letter -> draw a picture

Make dinner -> set the table

Take a sick neighbor to the doctor -> take them some flowers

There are so many things you can do to help others and that’s one way to let God know we are listening. Let’s pray. Dear God, help us to know your will and to do your will, every day. Help us to be your followers and to show others God’s love. We know that you choose us, and we know we can help others. Amen.
