The Importance of the Investment Manager at Big Issue Invest

The Investment Managerdevelops the profile of Big Issue Invest and identifies and processes deal flow for the investment business.

You’re already good at or possess:

  • Experience of the financial needs of businesses through a professional background in finance, commercial lending, private equity or venture capital investment;
  • Keen interest in social finance and the development of the social enterprise sector;
  • Strong financial analysis and business assessment skills;
  • Selling skills and an ability to generate new business opportunities and relationships;
  • Experience of customer relationship management;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to relate sensitively to a wide and diverse range of individuals and organisations;
  • Practised presentation skills and an ability to communicate information to a wide variety of audiences;
  • High levels of energy and enthusiasm with the ability to work on your own initiative with minimal supervision;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including practiced skills in financial modelling in Excel;
  • Committed to the social objectives and values of the Big Issue Group.

What kind of thing does the Investment Manager do?

  • Appraise and develop investment opportunities from social and community enterprises. This will include appraising the commercial and financial viability of the organisation and their ability to afford to take on investment;
  • Grow a client portfolio;
  • Build long-term relationships with clients and monitor their financial and social performance;
  • Promote the organisation externally, including attending events, networking, making presentations and building relationships with key stakeholders;
  • Lead commercial and financial due diligence and prepare investment applications for consideration by the Senior Investment Managers and / or Investment Committee. This will involve thorough market research, financial analysis, modelling and forecasting, and social impact assessment;
  • Identify and secure, evaluate and prioritise a pipeline of new business opportunities;
  • Source, screen and assess applications from social and community enterprises that meet BII’s investment criteria;
  • Manage and support a portfolio of clients, monitoring the social and financial performance of existing investments and reviewing management information and compliance with covenants;
  • Undertake targeted research and marketing efforts and represent BII by attending and speaking at conferences and by providing advice and explaining what BII is looking for in its investments;
  • Support the senior management of BII and staff team in the administration, development and growth of BII.
