World History Syllabus – Mrs. Holland
Course Description: In addition to mastering the objectives in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, students completing this course will sharpen their abilities to think abstractly, critically and reflectively. This course will analyze the political, social, economic and geographic factors which have influenced the history of the world through the use of primary sources, novels and writing. In addition, many famous people of the world are studied. Students will be asked to read and write in a variety of different formats and for a variety of purposes. Students will also be assessed in a variety of formats and will take part in individual and group projects.

Unit 2 – World Religions and Medieval Europe
Unit 3 – New Ideas, New Empires
Unit 4 – Changes in European Society
Unit 5 – Industrialization & Nationalism
Unit 6 – The World at War
Unit 7 – Contemporary World (1945 – Present)
Expectations of Performance:
1. Students should come to class each day prepared with folders, paper, pens/pencils and textbook.
2. Students should read the textbook and any other assigned documents. They should take notes on what they read whether note taking is assigned or not.
3. Students should have all assignments completed when assigned. Work will not be taken late.
4. Students whose grade falls below a “C” should attend Learning Center for remediation.
5. Students will keep a folder (notebook) for each unit. It should be arranged according to the table of contents sheet that I will give them. It will be taken up and graded at the end of each unit.
Attendance: Students are expected to be present and on time for each class meeting. They should follow the school attendance policy and the policy for making up time.
Exams: There is not an EOC for World History. However, I do give a comprehensive final exam. Exam exemptions will be based on the school’s exemption policy.
Grading:
30% - Daily work/homework
30% - Projects/Folders
40% - Tests
Class Rules/Discipline: Good discipline is expected of every student. You will be expected to follow all school and county rules and policies. However, there are a few rules I want to emphasize for this class:
1. No food or drinks in the classroom
2. No sleeping
3. No profanity or disrespectful language/actions
Consequences:
1. Warning
2. Conference
3. Parent Contact
4. Office Referral
You are not guaranteed any of these steps. If your behavior warrants, I may go to any of the steps. Rewards will be given to the class for good behavior, no tardies, etc.
Class Procedures:
1. Sit in your assigned seat.
2. Your name, date and the name of the assignment should be on all papers.
3. No cheating.
4. Take care of all personal needs before class (bathroom, nurse, office, guidance, seeing a teacher/coach, locker, etc.).
5. Follow directions.
