CLASS TITLE:SWITCHBOARD OPERATOR I

This is work operating a telephone switchboard.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Answers all incoming local and long distance calls and makes proper connection to person or office requested; places outgoing local and long distance calls; keeps records of long distance calls, telegrams received, and messages which cannot be delivered immediately, answers routine non-technical questions and refers other questions to proper persons or offices.
  • Acts as receptionist, registering callers, directing them to proper office and giving routine information.
  • Places interoffice calls.
  • Performs clerical work such as filing, typing, posting simple data and making inventories.
  • Performs related work as required.

  • Knowledge of the techniques of effective verbal communication.
  • Ability to remember numbers and details.
  • Ability to handle telephone calls in a fast, courteous and efficient manner.
  • Ability to speak clearly and correctly.
  • Ability to listen effectively.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to spell and to locate information that is listed alphabetically.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Six months of work experience involving public contact.
  • Vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 60 classroom hours for each month of the required work experience.
  • A high school diploma or its equivalent can substitute for the required work experience.
