PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Special Guests, Members, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome to the Western Youth Centre’s 56th Annual Report.

I am pleased to advise that we have just completed another challenging and successful year for the Centre.

It is exciting to report our new website went live in December last year after many months of working with the designers, Boylen Media, we are still fine tuning the layout and gathering all data to be input from our various clubs. The process of input is obviously ongoing and as our clubs become more familiar with the options available for the site we will be able to build on the data to give us a very important tool to advertise and promote the Centre to the general community. We are extremelygrateful to the LUCRF Community Partnership Trust for their grant of $10,000.00 to allow this project to become a reality. I encourage all members to visit the site at and provide any feedback you think may be beneficial to improve the user experience.

Fundraising initiatives were quiet this year. We had a Bingo Night in October last year which was attended by approximate 90 people and raised $1040.00. I would like to specially thank Denise Smart and Jenny Dickson for their organising of the night and to all the clubs for their attendance and donation of prizes. We plan to hold another Bingo night on the 20th September this year so I hope to see some of you there. We also undertook a sausage sizzle at Bunnings Mile End in July this year and again the clubs are to be congratulated for their assistance enabling us to raise $1650.00. National Pharmacies of Mile End have continued with their sponsorship of $1000.00 to the Centre. This is their 3rd year of sponsoring the Centre and we are most grateful for their support.

Congratulations to all our member clubs and their committees for all their hard work throughout the year. Kinder-gym, Gymnastics and Table tennis have increased their participation numbers which is extremely encouraging for the future and other clubs have remained steady.

We are grateful again for the contribution from the West Torrens Council both financially and with ongoing maintenance issues. In February we were approached by Council in conjunction with Football United and University SA to run a Tuesday afternoon soccer programme for children aged 10-14years. Children were recruited from local schools and numbers have continued to increase as parents become aware of this programme. We were happy to share our facilities with our resident soccer club, Adelaide Titans, also providing coaches when required. This programme will run every Tuesday afternoon till the end of this year.

Steve Georganas has agreed to continue in the role of Patron of the Centre for the following year.We thank Steve for his continuing commitment to this important role and we look forward to working with Steve in the future.

Congratulations to all our Award recipients this year and especially to the Adelaide Allstars Master Marching Team who achieved National Championship successwhich is indeed a wonderful achievement for all involved.

Thank you to the Management Committee for their work and support throughout the year. A hard working group whose primary concern is to ensure this Centre continues to grow and remain viable in the future. Once again I would like to give a special thank you to Jill Atwell, our Secretary/Treasurer, who continues to work for the betterment of the Centre.

Again a thank you to everyone who has played a part in ensuring that the Western Youth Centre continues to be successful and I am sure we can all look positive to the future.

KEVIN JOSEPH

PRESIDENT

TREASURER’S REPORT

This year has proven to be challenging for the Centrebecause of higher than expected increasesinexpenditure of around 1.3%than budgeted. Although our income has increased through levies and memberships which are very pleasing we found our Hall hiring facilities fall by 2.9% this year.

We hope that now the Centre’s website is up and running this will improve our chances of increasing the hall hire facilities more andperhaps even increasing our membership base even further next year.

It is very important for the Centre to keep on improving its strategies to remain financially viable.

The main expenditure of the Centre this year has been the Insurance (paid through our special project account), Electricity,Telephone,Maintenance,Water, Gas,and Wage requirements of running the Centre. Therefore the Management found that they needed to increase all aspects of the Centres’ income and club fees for next year. The Management must watch very carefully its expenditure and by doing so will kept the Centre going in the right direction.

In the next year or so the Management will be looking at the possibility of a huge replacement project of the Prescott Hall Floor this is due to the fact that the old floor glue has been giving way and the parquetry has lifted in several large areas. This will be a very costly exercise so The Centre Management should make sure thatall the correct processes and finances are in place.

I feel and know that this Centre is a very important facility for the local community providing a wide range of activities for both young and old at very low competitive prices. So it is important that we make a huge effort to advertise and promote the Centre to as many people as we can to improve our membership and attendance here at the Centre.

This year saw two of our long term casual employees leave the Centre Margo Wohlenberg and Michael James their dedication and commitment was very much appreciated and will be truly missed by myself and the Management Committee we wish them every success in their future endeavours.

Now I would like take this time to personally thank the West Torrens Council for their Grant of $33,200.00 this financial year which goes towards the cleaning and administration costs and we look forward to their continued support in the coming year.

Finally a special thanks to our President Kevin for all his support and assistance throughout the past year.

JILL ATWELL

This year has been an eye opener. In my first year as President I have seen things work well and then seen things go wrong. Overall I believe the club has made steps in the right direction but there is still a long way to go if we are to get the club to where it needs to be. We had a much better on field success and mixed results off field.

There was once again a willingness from many at the club to leave too much to too little and it was too much for those people to be able to deal with on their own. Our off field social activities were a bit like a roller coaster, with a successful Quiz Night yet our Gentlemen’s Night a failure. The club is trying new ideas to make our events as fun as possible, but we need you to support us and make the effort to come. There is still a majority of people who are happy for the minority to shoulder the majority of the work need to start to contribute before it is too late.

Mark Whenan led the A grade for most of the year after Rob Hopkins stepping down from the job after round four. The A Grade had a lot more consistency with their availabilities this season and the results showed as they made it back into the finals series after a year absence. They guys showed a lot of heart and fight in the finals having beaten South Road in the Semi Final then falling just short against Cove in the Grand Final. In both games the guys could have let the game slip when the momentum was not with them but dug deep to make them great contest. Great year guys!

Shaun Visser put his hand up for the B Grade captain’s role this season. The season got off really well, but sadly towards the end of the season player availabilities became an issue and this affected the team results. In having said that we are still hopeful the B grade may have a chance of making the finals in the last round. Like the A grade last season if we can get a consistent team on the park the team will be a tough team to beat. Well done on the year to all players.

Marty Dugan took on the C Grade this season. As a new player to the club I credit him for taking on a captain role especially when no other player wanted to step up to the role, Thanks Marty. The C Grade were put up to section 3 this season, not what we wanted but the association thought we could cope going up. It was not a great year for the c grade, finishing bottom without a win and quite often losing outright or close to it. The biggest issue that we dealt with was players not rocking up. Even with us naming and confirming 11 players each game they quite often only had 8 players rock up. A lot of these players need to have a hard look at what it takes to be a team and work for each other. We can only improve next season and I look forward to some players standing up to this level next season.

Lee Fuller again had the D Grade captaincy to his name. The D Grade had a great season, finishing the minor round in 2nd position, and the only team to beat the top side. The side also had to deal with a number of changes to their team throughout the year so to keep the winning up was a great effort. The guys made it hard work in the semi-final but got up by 1 run to book their spot in the Grand Final. The Grand Final I’m sure to the players is “the one that got away” after having Adelaide Cavs 6/60 to end up chasing 188, then once again with our batting losing 3/0 to fall agonisingly short by 2 runs. Despite the result the guys should be proud of their efforts this season and come back next season wanting to take it one step further.

We were knocked out in the first round of the ASCA T20.

Neville Linke again co-ordinated the junior program this season. Junior numbers were again low and we need to address this matter with a sense of urgency to replenish the numbers in our junior program. Our Milo Cricket Program was well attended this season and hopefully this is the start of replenishing the clubs junior numbers. The coaches that helped out this year with the juniors made it enjoyable for the kids to participate and we look forward to your continued efforts next season. Hopefully next year will see an increase in the amount of people willing to help with the junior program.

It is also important that all players take the responsibility to recruit new players to our club. I ask all of you to ask your mates to come out and have a hit so that we can continue to field our 4 senior sides.

I would like to thankthe West Adelaide Football club for their continued support of the club as our after match venue and major sponsor. Thanks also to British Raj, MyTelco and Cowandilla Charcoal Chicken for their support this season.

Thanks must also go to Kevin Joseph and the WYC management for their support throughout the year.

To all trophy winners congratulations on a superb year. Well done to Robbie Hopkins on the cricketer of the year award a superb effort. Well done to Christian Sloniec on his all-rounder trophy. Well done to Neville Linke who is the recipient of the best Club Man (again), the juniors wouldn’t have been what they were this year without your commitment. Congratulations to Mark Whenan who is the recipient of the President’s trophy, your help to me in my first year as president has been fantastic and I appreciate it.

Thanks to those who have made contributions this year. To Jayne for helping get all the books and trophies ready for tonight. Without your help we as a club could not have made any inroads to turning the club around. It has been a challenging year and we still have a lot to do. I am somewhat happy with my year as I feel and know that I need to do a lot more to improve the club but with the committee we are determined to do what it takes to get results. I have enjoyed the challenge and look forward to another season with this great club next year. Until then I hope you have a great off season and wish you luck with whatever sport you play in this period and I will see you at Pre Season!
