Student Guidelines for the IDIS Major Capstone Project

Capstone: the final project of the IDIS major

·  This project must integrate the three (3) areas of your IDIS major.

·  For every registered credit, you must accomplish 45 hours of effort.

§  A 3-credit hour capstone would require 135 hours of effort.

§  It is suggested you journal your time spent as evidence.

·  Determine a purpose to your project which will help you as you go forward in your studies and work.

§  You will want to rely on the areas of strength of your mentor/supervisor.

§  You may want to tie together some areas of study taken, or look forward with ideas for future study/work.

·  The student is responsible for recruiting the mentor/supervisor for the capstone, logically a teacher from one of the three capstone areas, most likely the “minor”.

§  Your academic advisor may have suggestions, but talking to professors in your areas of concentration will provide insight as to who is willing to assist you in your study.

·  The student is responsible for formulating ideas to discuss with the prospective mentor/supervisor. You will acquire the help of a mentor/supervisor more quickly if you have ideas and energy around a certain capstone project.

The Capstone Proposal [Document]

·  The proposal must be for at least 3 credits.

·  The research or activity planned for the semester should be outlined.

·  Be specific about the kind of research (e.g. periodicals, interviews, work in off-campus settings, text book research)

·  Include a specific plan about weekly or biweekly contact with the mentor/supervisor.

·  Include a timeline for completion of assignments or various check points in the study.

·  Describe the end product of the study. For example, will you write a paper (and how long); or will you prepare a notebook and PowerPoint presentation.

·  Include a description of how you will do a presentation for the other IDIS majors.

·  Include the college grade scale and an assessment tool which will be used to determine your semester grade for the capstone project.

Both the student taking the capstone and the supervisor agreeing to mentor the project bear responsibility for the meetings and progress through the “check points” of the project. Ultimately the content and accomplishments of the student during this capstone are the responsibility of the student and will be assessed in that regard.
