COME AND SING WITH THE WORLD’S CHOIRS!

Ticket sales have begun for the events at the Grand Prix of Nations Rīga 2017 and the 3rd European Choir Games programme, which will transform Rīga into the world choir music capital. From 20th April, tickets will be on sale at all Biļešu Paradīze sales outlets and on the internet at www.bilesuparadize.lv .

From 16th to 23rd July, more than 150 choirs will competing in Rīga in 10 different categories. There will also be friendship concerts taking place on outside stages, Introduction concert of Latvian Song and Dance Celebration Pa zvaigžņu ceļu and a Parade of Nations, while concerts at the Rīga Dome Cathedral and special events at Arēna Rīga are also planned. Most of the Choir Games events will have free entry, which will provide an opportunity for everyone to gain new experiences and to find out about the cultures of different peoples. Alongside the wide range of free events, there’ll also be specially created concert programmes.

Both young and old are invited to Arēna Rīga on 20th July, to see a multi-media Child and Youth Major Choir Concert called CROSSING THE BRIDGES, which tells of various diverse worlds and the bridges which unify us. Soloists Aminata and Daumants Kalniņš, youth choirs from different countries, the Riga United Music Schools Symphony Orchestra and Kristaps Krievkalns’ group will be taking part in the concert. The CROSSING THE BRIDGES song cycle was composed by Uldis Marhilēvičs and Guntars Račs specially for the Choir Games and will be played for the first time at this major concert.

On the evening of 22nd July, people will have the opportunity to be present for the birth of a new tradition at Arēna Rīga. The new EUROVISION CHOIR OF THE YEAR television talent competition will be joining the Eurovision international competition family. Choirs from nine countries will be competing for the title of competition winner: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia, Hungary, Germany and Great Britain (Wales), with each performing a six-minute-long programme. The competition will be judged by an international jury, with Latvia being represented by opera singer Elīna Garanča.

Music lovers will definitely be interested in the NORDIC LIGHTS concert featuring Latvian and Scandinavian contemporary spiritual music, which will take place on 18th June at Rīga Dome Cathedral. The spiritual music will be performed by the Rīga Cathedral Boys Choir, the Jāzeps Mediņš School of Music Boys’ Choir, the Örebro Chamber Choir (Sweden), the Nordic Voices vocal group (Norway) and organist Iveta Apkalna. Whereas, on 21st July, the Rīga Dome Cathedral will resound with a mighty five hundred voice multinational choir in a sing along concert which will perform THE CREATION oratory by J.Haydn .

Those without the time to follow the choir competition, but with the desire to experience the special Choir Games atmosphere, emotions and the diverse sounds of the champion choirs, will find it worth their while to attend the Choir Games’ competition winners AWARD CEREMONY on 19th June and the CLOSING CONCERT on 23rd July at Arēna Rīga. This will be an opportunity to see the true joy of the participants on receiving their awards and to listen and sing along in the special Festival choir programme.

From 16th to 23rd July 2017, we will all be gathering together at the Grand Prix of Nations Rīga 2017 and the 3rd European Choir Games, to make friends, to find out about and get to know each other’s culture better, confirming that singing together brings nations together. Events at the Choir games are funded by the Rīga City Council and are being organized by the Rīga Tourism Development Bureau and the German Culture Organization Interkultur.
