1 / About our school
Our school roll for session 2014/15 was 150. The pupils were allocated to 7 classes The total staffing this session, was 8.3 teachers plus a probationer teacher. This includes the Head Teacher, two Principal Teachers and 5 class teachers. One Principal Teacher, Mrs Din, was seconded to the Education Authority 2 days a week as a Numeracy Development Officer. The other Principal teacher, Miss Aitchison, has a remit for Additional Support Needs and non-class contact cover, including French.
You will notice that some of the school’s internal ceilings have been in a state of disrepair following leaks in January. These are scheduled to be repaired in the summer holidays, along with new pupil toilets. We continue to improve other aspects of the school building, including a new gym hall floor which was jointly funded by Glasgow City Council and our Parent Council.
School vision and values
We are a nurturing school where everyone feels safe, happy and valued and all children are supported to reach their full potential. This is achieved through working together with children, their families and the community, based on a shared sense of direction.
The values that underpin all our work are:
WellbeingEquality
Community
Achievement
Respect
Each Other
We will continue to support your child in the coming year to develop confidence and resilience to achieve their full potential now and in the future.
2
/ Our achievements this year.
This year we worked on three areas for improvement. Children, parents, staff and other partners worked together to achieve:
- We continue to improve how we teach reading and have employed new assessment procedures this session. We have purchased new fiction and non-fiction resources. New guidance for teaching Reading in P4-7 will be in place next session.
- We have revisedteachers’ planning and recording to address workload and allow more time for teaching and learning, in line with National recommendations.
- We have reviewed how we teach Technologies across the school and will implement an improved programme for this next session.
3 / How well do young people learn and achieve? (Quality indicators 1.1, 2.1)
Children across the school continue to achieve very well. They develop confidence, self-esteem and skills through involvement events such as:
- Trinidad and Tobago Concert
- Glasgow Schools’ Ultimate Dance Competition
- Football League
- Athletics events
- After school clubs – including choir and cycling
- Participation in Rotary Club quiz
- Supporting community events such as Gala Day
Attainment in Mathematics & Numeracy, English & Literacy and Health & Wellbeing has remained at a consistently high standard across the school with almost all children making appropriate progress.
All pupils reflect on their learning regularly in their Learning Logs and Learning Journeys map their achievements in key areas. These are regularly shared with parents and carers.
4 / How well do we support young people in their learning and development? (Quality Indicators 5.1, 5.3)
We follow the Curriculum for Excellence and ensure we provide children with learning opportunities in line with this. We have worked this year to improve the teaching of Science and Technologiesand will build on this next year. We have a strong “learning for sustainability” practice which includes work on global education through our link school in Trinidad and Tobago. Our P4 class has an e:twinning link with Spain. We also have developed our school grounds to promote biodiversity through our work as an Eco School.
The school is very good at ensuring all children learn well and teachers plan for each individual child. Our planning is now more responsive to children’s interests and needs, and provides opportunities for children to develop thinking skills, creativity, co-operative and independent working. Children enjoy lessons and are motivated to learn.
Additional Support Plans are used in the school to ensure children with additional needs are fully supported. Pupils and parents are involved in the planning and review process. Miss Aitchison, Principal Teacher, has lead responsibility for Additional Support Needs. At times we work with other agencies to ensure each child is fully supported.
Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) underpins everything we do for children in the school and this will continue to be a focus for us next session.
5 / How well do we improve our work? (Quality Indicator 5.9, 9.4)
The school is very aware of its strengths and understands well what can be done better. We continually look at what we do and are dedicated to keep improving our school. Staff are involved in regular training opportunities to keep their skills up to date and this session have been trained in Professional Update.
All staff are extremely committed to children and their families andlisten to the views. When appropriate, we seek to work with them to make our school even better. Parents are supportive of the school and appreciate the range of ways they can share their views with staff. The Parent Council are valuable in helping with this.
6 / Here is what we plan to improve next year.
- Ensure GIRFEC is fully implemented, including Wellbeing Assessment Plans and Nurture Principles are in place.
- Improve the teaching of Science & Technologies across the school.
- Review and improve the Expressive Artscurriculum within the school, including Music, Dance, Drama and Art & Design.
Feedback from parents/carers.
Our Parent Questionnaires returned in February 2015 indicated a high level of satisfaction with all aspects of the school. These help to inform our improvement planning. We welcome any feedback from parents and carers on this report or any aspects of our work at any time. Please contact the school by letter, telephone or email if you wish to comment further.
