Welcome to another exciting year of band! Wehave a great year planned andI can’t wait to get started! In addition to lessons and band, this year students will have the opportunity to audition for jazz band – please contact me, Mrs. W, if your child still needs to audition. In5th grade band your child will be performing in 2 concerts. Concert dates are listed below:
The OES 5th Grade Winter Concert – Wednesday, November 28, at 7:00 PM at the OAMS Theater
The OES 5th Grade Spring Concert – Wednesday, May 22 at 7:00 PM at the OAMS Theater
Attendance is mandatory and students are expected to dress in their “Sunday Best” for these concerts. No sneakers or T-shirt please.
This year your child will attend one 30 minute lesson each cycle. Lesson schedules will be sent out inweekly emails,posted outside the band room, and in each classroom. Students are responsible for checking the band board for lesson updates but in general this is the current 5th grade band schedule:
Day / Lessons / Rehearsal and Time4 / Flute and Clarinet / 5th Band Rehearsal 1:40-2:10
5 / Saxophone and Trumpet / 5th Jazz Band Rehearsal 1:40-2:10
Occasional jazz sectionals may be called in recess as well
6 / Low Brass and Percussion / 5th Band Rehearsal 1:40-2:10
This year your child will need to bring the following to every lesson: pencil, instrument, and music. Students will be graded equally on attendance, behavior and preparedness at lessons, rehearsals, and concerts. Second year band students will also be graded on performance OR practice. If your child does not wish to be graded on their performance of material they must log at least75 minutes of practice time with a parent/guardian signature each week for full credit. There is a practice log in the lesson book. Students are excused from lessons for tests and if they are absent. If a lesson needs to be missed please tell Mrs. W. in advance and get the assignment. Make up lessons can be scheduled in advance with Mrs. W. for recess on days 4, 5, and 6.
OACSD is happy to be able to provide instruments for most children in grades 4-5. Please use this time to save up for and/or look for an instrument for 6th grade. Because there are a limited number of school instruments we cannot always provide your child with their first choice. If your child does not get their first choice you may consider renting or purchasing an instrument for your child now. Some music vendors are listed on the back of this form but feel free to contact me if you have questions. Within 5th grade, priority of instruments is given to students registered first and those continuing on the same instrument. Students are highly encouraged to continue on the same instrument they studied last year.
