CIMMYT is an organization whose research brings hope to developing countries by

addressing food and poverty issues. One of its scientists won the Nobel Peace Prize

in 1970 and helped create the Green Revolution. We have changed the world

before, and we plan to continue doing so!

Our newly restructured research programs require a group of ambitious Directors to lead them into the future. A Director will be appointed for each of the following six new programs (the location of the posting follows the program title):

1. Genetic Resources— Based in Latin America

§  Develop and implement strategic themes in the area of genetic resources and gene discovery, applying technologies such as wide crossing, genomics, genetic engineering and bioinformatics.

§  Provide strategic guidance for CIMMYT work to conserve, characterize, and use maize and wheat genetic resources.

2. Impacts Targeting and Assessment— Based in Latin

America

§  Develop and implement strategic themes focusing on poverty analysis, impact assessment, knowledge management, innovative decision, and planning tool development.

§  Balance skills in economics, anthropology, social science, and geographic information systems.

3. African Livelihoods— Based in Africa

§  Develop and implement strategic themes highly focused on the use of CIMMYT commodities and technologies to improve livelihoods in sub-Saharan Africa.

§  Develop partnerships that integrate efforts to reduce poverty in sub-Saharan Africa.

4. Rainfed Wheat Systems— Based in Central or West

Asia/North Africa

§  Develop and implement strategic themes within rainfed agroecologies to maximize the impact of wheat-based systems on poverty alleviation.

§  Knowledge of dryland farming systems and an understanding of efficient water use in dryland ecologies.

5. Tropical Ecosystems— Based in Latin America

§  Develop and implement strategic themes within tropical ecosystems to maximize the impact of crop-based production systems on poverty alleviation.

§  Focus on the inter-relations of agriculture and natural resource management in specific production systems.

6. Intensive Agro-ecosystems— Based in Asia

§  Develop and implement strategic themes within intensive agroecological areas to maximize the impact of crop based production systems on poverty alleviation.

§  Focus on the inter-relations of agriculture and natural resource management in specific production systems.

Each Program Director must possess the following qualifications:

§  Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant field with 10+ years of research experience, including at least three years of research management.

§  Strong record in applied research and delivering research products.

§  Innovativeness and the ability to bring new ideas and approaches.

§  Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English. Knowledge of other, pertinent languages is an asset.

§  Ability to manage multi-disciplinary, outcome-oriented research teams and to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary, multicultural team.

§  Experience in developing country agriculture.

§  Experience in fundraising, preferably in relation to International Development Agencies.
