Explore the life of tribal families who live in the rainforest and compare the way they live to your own family life. Celebrate the life of tribal people by sharing a feast of food and drink from the rainforest, and by teaching others what has been learnt about tribal designs and shelter building.

By the end of this block you will have achieved the following outcomes: /
  • Understand types of settlement and land use, economic activity including trade links, and the distribution of natural resources including food.
  • Understand geographical similarities and differences through the study of human geography of a region of the UK and a region of South America.
  • Use a wide range of devices to build cohesion within and across paragraphs and use further organisational and presentational devices to structure text and to guide the reader.
  • To use research and develop design criteria to functional products that are fit for purpose, aimed at particular individuals or groups.

Explore the life of tribal families who live in the rainforest and compare this to your own family life. Role-play rainforest family life and write a comparative ‘day in the life of’ diary page. / Children will

  • Write a comparative diary between the life of a child from another culture and myself.

Research the different type of rainforest homes and settlements; create shelters from natural materials to build a tribal village. / Children will
  • Develop an understanding of the similarities and differences between their own homes and those of others.
  • Design a home or shelter from a given set of resources.
  • Make a home or shelter based on their designs.
  • Evaluate how they can and could improve their design.

Black and White Versus Colour – Tribal Art
Describe tribal art and understand its significance; design and create your own tribal art works. / Children will
  • Explore tribal art in relation to the Kayapo tribe.
  • Design their own Kayapo-style patterns.
  • Investigate different effects that can be created with colour and monochrome.

3D Art from The Rainforest
Understand the importance of masks, headdresses and face paint to tribal people; design and make your own masks and headdresses. / Children will
  • Explore tribal art in relation to world tribes.
  • Design their own headdresses based on real ones.
  • Design their own masks based on real ones.
  • Understand the use of masks and headdresses in tribal rituals.

Session 5
Geography, Music and Dance
Music and dance of the rainforest
Listen and respond to music from the rainforest and South America; reflect on the importance of dance in tribal life and create your own group dance. / Children will:
  • Explore tribal dance from Africa.
  • Plan their own dance sequences to African music.
  • Perform their dances to an audience.

Session 6
Geography,Art, DT, and Dance
Celebration of rainforest life
Celebrate the life of tribal people by sharing a feast of food and drink from the rainforest, performing a dance and teaching others what you have learned about tribal designs and shelter building. / Children will:
  • Create artwork with a tribal art theme.
  • Build shelters from a given set of materials.
  • Experience food that naturally grows in the rainforest.
  • Perform their dances to an audience.

You will need: Art pencils ranging from 2H to 4B or range of soft to hard pencils; Sketch paper (cut into 10cm x 25cm strips, a least 2 per child); Coloured pencils; Black fine tip felt pens for outlining colour (optional).

Session 4

You will need: Brown and coloured card; Glue; Coloured pens; Feathers; Scissors; Mask moulds; Selection of dried beans and pulses; Raffia; Card.

You will need: Brazilian Playground CD and African Playground CD; Face paint (optional).

Session 6
