JOB DESCRIPTION
Serves as a knowledgeable professional for the academic, career and personal/social development of English language learners. Promotes and enhances the overall academic mission by providing services that strengthen home, school and community partnerships and address barriers to learning and achievement. “Assists all limited English proficient children, including immigrant children and youth to achieve at high levels in the core academic subjects so that those children can meet these same challenging State content and student academic achievement standards as all children are expected to meet consistent with Section 111 (b)(1).” (Title III, NCLB). Responsible for assuring students have a rigorous, relevant, free and appropriate educational opportunity regardless of race, language or national origin.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the general direction of the Director of Student Services and the Director of Special Programs/Projects, performs the following services which include but are not limited to the following examples of duties and functions:

1.  Personal counseling for English language learners in grades 9-12 and grades K-8 (on call)

2.  Crisis intervention sessions (suicide intervention, extreme behavior, death of family member, or student or staff, extreme situations) for English language learners in grades 9-12 and grades K-8 (on call)

3.  Makes referrals to appropriate professionals or agencies when necessary; Reports abuse/neglect

4.  Small group counseling for English language learners in grades 9-12 and grades K-8 (on call) on topics including but not limited to: transitioning, relationships, pursuing scholarships, career/ college planning, cultural awareness, and immigration

5.  Registration, evaluation of academic needs, transcript evaluation (international and domestic) and scheduling of all high school English language learners and rising ninth graders

6.  Identification of students who may benefit from high school SIOP classes based on student profiles/collaboration with instructors

7.  Identifies/coordinates support services for high school students at-risk of dropping out (NOVANET, 20 credit-diploma, tutoring)

8.  Coordinates career development, college planning and scholarship activities for English language learners

9.  Collaborates/communicates with administrators and other instructional leadership to identify needs for additional SIOP classes

10.  Provides and seeks consultation services as needed

11.  Monitors academic and course progress of English language learners to ensure each student is on a path to graduate

12.  Serves as liaison between the school sites, parents and the Department of Special Programs/Projects

13.  Maintains knowledge of current regulations pertaining to ELLs and counseling services

14.  Participates on school-based LEP Committees and School Improvement Teams as appropriate

15.  Advocates for appropriate services for students and their families

16.  Promotes cultural and linguistic awareness and understanding among students, staff, families and the community

17.  Performs all other assigned duties of school counselors

18.  Performs other related duties as assigned
