Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated on September 8th, nine months after the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The Blessed Virgin’s parents, St. Ann and Joachim, were an aging couple praying for a child. Mary’s birth was miraculous, as she was conceived without sin (Immaculate Conception), an exclusive grace God bestowed upon her because she was predestined to be the mother of the Incarnate Son of God. The birth of the Virgin Mary ushers in the dawn of the redemption of the human race through Jesus Christ.
Q: What is the Immaculate Conception?
Q: Why is it important that Mary was conceived without sin?

Month of Our Lady of Sorrows

The Church dedicates the month of September to Our Lady of Sorrows. This devotion recalls the Blessed Virgin Mary’s spiritual martyrdom in virtue of her perfect union with the Passion of Christ. This was her role in salvation history, and what merited her place as the spiritual Mother of all Christians. This is symbolized by a single sword, or seven swords, piercing Mary's suffering heart, as foretold in Simeon's prophecy. Traditionally the Church meditates on the "Seven Sorrows" of our Blessed Mother.
Bonus: What are the 7 sorrows of Mary?
  1. The Prophecy of Simeon. (Luke2:34–35)
  2. The escape andFlight into Egypt. (Matthew2:13)
  3. The Loss of theChild Jesusin the Temple of Jerusalem. (Luke 2:43–45)
  4. The Meeting of Mary and Jesus on theVia Dolorosa.
  5. The Crucifixion of Jesuson Mount Calvary. (John19:25)
  6. The Piercing of the Side of Jesus, and HisDescent from the Cross. (Matthew 27:57–59)
  7. TheBurial of JesusbyJoseph of Arimathea. (John 19:40–42)
It is a common practice for Catholics to say daily oneOur Fatherand sevenHail Maryswhile meditating on each sorrow.

Summer Reading:each student was assigned and given a short biography of a saint to read
over the summer. The students will draw numbers to see who will present first, second…
Presentations will begin on Sunday, September24th. Presentations should be 5 to 10 minutes long.
Students should complete the worksheet to prepare for their presentation.
Mrs. Hoy will model a presentation for the class.
Positively Dangerous:
Each student will be given a copy of the book Positively Dangerous.
The book contains 8 chapters and students will be responsible for reading one chapter a week.
Each class we will have a discussion and activity based on that chapter.
Today, the class will read the introduction together.
The goal of this theme is to teach our teenagers that their faith can have a positive effect on their lives and the lives of others. “Becoming positively dangerous is not what you can do but what you can be. It’s not about changing others as much as it is about changing yourself. You are the danger factor – your relationship with God and the way you conduct your life. Others are only vulnerable because you live and share your life in such a positive way that it becomes dangerously contagious.”
Parents are invited and strongly encouraged to read this book.
Housekeeping:
Remind students to continue working with their sponsor in the Faith to Faith workbook.
Deadline for completion is Jan 7th.
Closing Prayer:tape to your bathroom mirror and say daily
Father Baker’s Prayer
O Victorious Lady,
Thou who has ever such powerful influence with thy Divine Son,
In conquering the hardest of hearts,
Intercede for those for whom we pray,
(think of someone who is away from God or struggling with their faith)
That their hearts being softened by the rays of Divine Grace,
They may return to the unity of the true Faith, through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
