COURSE OUTLINE:

TIGER CUBS: Understanding and Supporting the Program

PURPOSE: To give the Unit Commissioner an introduction and overview of the Tiger Cub program and

to help them understand the importance of the Tiger Cubs to their Cub Scout units.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To acquaint Unit Commissioners with the basic principles of the Tiger Cub BSA program, and to help them understand the importance of maintaining focus on these principles.
  • To acquaint Unit Commissioners with the program enhancements made in 1996 under the Operation: Tiger Mania promotion
  • To familiarize Unit Commissioners with resources available to organize and implement a successful Tiger Cubs BSA program

AGENDA

PREOPENING:

As participants arrive, play the recruiting video, “Tiger Cubs, Yeah!” Introduce yourself and any other staff members there might be, and have participants introduce themselves.

OPENING: [3 minutes]

Have three of the participants come to the front. Give them each a card, shielded from the audience. On the backs of the cards are the words of the Tiger Cubs motto: SEARCH; DISCOVER; SHARE. Ask the audience to read the words out loud as the three participants turn the cards over. Thank the audience and tell them that they have just learned the Tiger Cub Motto and the keys to making the program work.

WHAT IS TIGER CUBS BSA? [5 minutes]

Using “The Tiger Cub Guidebook”; cover the main points of Chapter 1, who can join, size of Tiger Cub dens, number of den meetings, and the den leadership concepts (shared leadership). You should also show the Tiger Cubs uniform and the recognition plan. Discuss the 17 Big Ideas and how they can be used to keep the program focused.

THE PACK’S ROLE/ THE TIGER CUB GROUP COACH [5 minutes]

Cover the main concepts of Chapter 2 of “The Tiger Cub Guidebook”; the relationship of the Tiger Cub Den to the Pack, the Tiger Cub Coach and their role in the Pack Committee and organizing a Tiger Cub Den. The Tiger Cub Coaches responsibility to keep contact and communication between the Pack and the Den is crucial.

THE ROLE OF THE COUNCIL AND DISTRICT [5 minutes]

Cover the main points from Chapter 3 of “The Tiger Cub Guidebook. Key in on the responsibility of the District and Council in training Tiger Cub Coaches and providing support activities for Tiger Cubs with promotion as well. Tiger Cub roundups and supporting the transition from Tiger Cubs to Cub Scouts should also be covered.

THE ROLE OF THE COMMISSIONER [8 minutes]

Show the “Operation: Tiger Mania” video. Upon completion of the video discuss the importance of following the program as outlined by National.

TIGER CUBS BSA PROGRAM ENHANCEMENTS [7 minutes]

Using “1996-1997 Spotlight on New and Updated Cub Scout Program Elements” cover the five areas of enhancements that were made in 1996. Program Methods; the new Recognition Program using the new Instant Recognition Kit for Tiger Cubs. Also cover changes to the uniform, training changes and promotional enhancements.

CLOSING [5 minutes]

Show participants resource materials and help them to understand how they can enhance the program.

Cover course objectives in retrospect and how what was covered meets those objectives. Ask for any questions and answer those as possible.
