The East Manchester Academy is seeking to appointa dedicated and inclusive teaching assistant to support pupils with a range of additional needs in order to help children succeed with their learning. The work of the teaching assistants may vary greatly depending on the individual needs of the pupils coming to the Academy.This role is central in assisting the development and establishment of the Academy’s high quality effectiveness of care, guidance and support.

The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the skills to work in a secondary school environment and to support pupils in all areas of the curriculum. In-service training and Continuing Professional Development opportunities will be provided as necessary. (The position may be appropriate to those considering a career in teaching).

All applicants must be willing to undertake manual handling training.

Applicants must be willing to attend to pupils’ personal needs and implement related personal programmes where required. This will include social, health, physical, hygiene, toileting and mobility assistance.

Candidates will require a minimum of 5 good GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Maths.

Job Description

Teaching and Learning

  1. Assist in the educational, personal and social development of pupils under the directionand guidance of the Principal, SENCO and class teachers.
  2. Assist in the devising and implementation of Individual Education Programmes for pupils and help track and monitor their progress and support intervention strategies.
  3. Provide support for individual pupils inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities.
  4. Work and communicate effectively with other professionals, such as the school nurse, as necessary
  5. Assist class teachers with maintaining pupil records.
  6. Support pupils with learning, emotional or behavioral problems and help develop their social and personal skills / competencies.
  7. Help pupils increase their confidence, self-esteem and independence.
  8. Liaise with the family where appropriate and under the direction of the SENCo.

Administrative duties

  1. Prepare and present displays of pupils' work.
  2. Support class teachers in photocopying and other tasks in order to support teaching and learning.
  3. Undertake other duties from time to time as the Principal requires.

Standards and quality assurance

  1. Support the aims and ethos of the Academyof excellence, high expectations and inclusion.
  2. Abide by the Academy Code of Staff Conduct in setting a good example in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance.
  3. Attend pupil case conferences, multi agency meetings, team and staff meetings as appropriate.
  4. Undertake professional duties that may be reasonably assigned by the Principal[e.g.reception, admin, etc.
  5. Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety.
