The remaining equipment in the Dental Hygiene Clinic Lab is fourteen years old and out-of-date. It is not up to the standard of what is utilized in the modern dental facility. The old chairs break down repeatedly, requiring continuous service repair. The dental equipment company will discontinue support of the remaining dental chairs in 2014, which means parts will be difficult to obtain. The dental tubing on the old chairs must be disinfected, which is costly to the department. This also poses a safety hazard of cross contamination; the new dental chairs are equipped with antimicrobial tubing eliminating the need to disinfect with costly chemicals.
It has been reported that with-in five years dental radiographic film will be difficult to locate. The majority of modern dental facilities utilize digital radiography.
The request for the USB intraoral camera will meet industry standards utilized in patient risk assessment.
The desired result is to complete the Dental Hygiene Clinic Lab Renovation Phase II. This would allow equitable learning for all students and prepare them to enter a workforce with current knowledge of industry standards.
7.  / Identify the impact on resources and anticipated costs of the Action Plan. (Resources to consider include Budget (supplies and/or equipment), Facilities, Human Resources, Staff Development, and Technology. Be sure to check with the appropriate college office for assistance in developing these costs; for example, check with the Director of Technology for technology purchase estimates, or the College Business Manager for estimates of human resource costs. Provide a total estimated cost of the Action Plan.)

Facilities

Carl Simms, SCCCD Director of Maintenance and Operations, is aware of a copper connection that would require soldering in order to accommodate the new A-dec dental chair vacuum system. Mr. Simms and his team provided this service during Phase I of the renovation.
The old dental chairs have been used in the Health Sciences building for the 14 years. When the old dental chairs are removed from the clinic, floor tiles under the chairs may be broken and/or removed completely. Mr. Simms said that if it is just a few tiles, his crew can probably make the repairs.
A-dec Dental Equipment Company and Patterson Dental Company have been contacted and have provided a written estimate for Phase II of the Dental Hygiene Clinic Laboratory renovation. Contracts reflect the costs of the clinic equipment and installation. Part of the cost ($800.00) is not included in the contract; it involves moving 16 A-dec 1021 chairs from the clinic to the District warehouse. The old clinic equipment would then be advertised for sale by the District and sold at the FCC surplus property public auction.

Human Resources

The American Dental Association, Commission on Dental Accreditation; requires a 1:5 instructor to student ratio. The Department of Dental Hygiene is in accordance with this accreditation requirement. No additional HR resources are requested at this time.

Technology

The support for Eaglesoft dental software must be factored into the budget, the current support (Phase I years 1-3) will expire in three years. As technology evolves, the computerized dental equipment will require support and replacement. Years 4-6 will require a budget line of $2,700.

1) Successfully complete patient treatment utilizing safe and reliable dental equipment according to occupational and licensing guidelines.
2) Demonstrate the skills to work in a modern, digital dental practice by entering patient treatment data, digital radiographs and intraoral photographs on the computer at their units. This skill would make graduates more employable and lead to more employer satisfaction.
