Region 3 DPI Regional Roundtable Meeting

MINUTES/NOTES

I.  Jim Coon called the meeting together at 9:00 am.

II.  Jim Coon recorded the attendance for this meeting and those member marked with “XX” on the attached attendance list were present. Welcome to Melissa Towery, Exceptional Children Division, Strategic Planning Consultant, who joined our Roundtable team for the first time.

III.  Jim Coon, facilitated a discussion on best/innovative practices, around the topics listed, by region, state and nation, and then compiled the following list based upon feedback provided:

·  Note: Often, because of site-base management, it is a principal’s leadership expertise, rather than district support, that helps guide/support these strategies.

IV.  Jim Coon reviewed the language of the new General Assembly Law, Section 8.28, with Roundtable members, which reads as follows:

Staff at the Department of Public Instruction shall, whenever practicable, respond to requests for information originating from the superintendent of a local school administrative unit, the principal officer of a charter school, or the principal of a regional school, or their designees, within three business days of receipt of the request. Absent extraordinary circumstances, requests for information shall be reasonably and fully answered within 14 business days following an initial response. V.  Neil Pedersen discussed the schedule of CCRESA/DPI Training Sessions/User Group Meetings for 2014-2015, he talked about the impact of reduced funding to the CCRESA from DPI, and he distributed a color-coded chart noting all planned dates.

VIII.  Dr. Lou Fabrizio gave a presentation on the “Goals and Objectives” that were initially approved by the State Board of Education (SBE) in April 2014, and that are still under development in some objective areas. The following two documents were shared with Roundtable members:

IX.  Jim Coon noted that future Region 3 Roundtable Meeting dates from September 19, 2014 through December 11, 2014, will be held on the 3rd Friday of each month, at CCRESA, Suite 104, 7208 Falls of the Neuse Road, Raleigh, North Carolina 27615 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, will be held on the following dates: (F) September 19, 2014; (F) October 17, 2014; (F) November 21, 2014; (F) December 19, 2014; (F) January 16, 2015; (F) February 20, 2015; (F) March 20, 2015; (F) April 17, 2015; (F) May 15, 2015; (F) June 19, 2015; (F) July 17, 2015; (F) August 21, 2015; (F) September 18, 2015; (F) October 16, 2015; (F) November 20, 2015; and, (F) December 18, 2015.

X.  Jim Coon noted that, due to the breadth and depth of issues facing NCDPI at this time, the next Roundtable meeting scheduled for September 19, 2014 will start at 9:00 am, lunch on your own will run from 11:30-12:30 pm and, there will be an afternoon session from 12:30-3:00 pm. The day is being extended so that all topics, presentations and reports can be adequately covered. Roundtable members who cannot stay for the afternoon session are still invited to attend the morning session and vice-versa for those who cannot attend the morning session.

XI.  Jim Coon adjourned the meeting at 12:30 pm.
