Dr. Robert Cormany will present a pre-conference program for pupil services administrators focusing on the evaluation of pupil services programs and staff.

Conference Keynote Speakers:

Supervisory Special Agent James Kyle is a twenty-five year veteran of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. SSA Kyle is presently an instructor in the Investigative Training Unit, at the FBI Academy, in Quantico, Virginia.

Jordan Burnham was honored as one of the “2010 Best of Philly” for his work with mental health and speaking. He has been featured in major Philadelphia print, Sports Illustrated, People Magazine, and USA Today. He’s appeared on local and national broadcast news, appeared on ESPN’s E:60 and Outside the Lines, CNN, Dr. Phil, Good Morning America, The Early Show and addressed a Congressional briefing on Capitol Hill. He has been featured in three documentaries, including one titled No, Kidding Me Too! which was directed by Emmy winning actor Joey Pantoliano?

Dr. Kathleen Conn’s special fields of interest and expertise in law are in the areas of First Amendment rights of students in K-12 public schools, public schools’ legal responses to technology misuse and bullying, including cyberbullying, and peer sexual harassment in schools. She has authored two books published by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), and numerous articles published in law reviews and educational journals.

Aevidum Program is a student center program focusing on suicidal ideation and depression amount students. Mr. Joseph Volupas, program coordinator in the Cocalico School District, and a group of students will describe how the program functions and how to start Aevidum in your school district.

Linda Fusco is a dynamic and enthusiastic attorney who has developed a unique level of proactive services by merging practical educational strategies with best practices under the law. As a former special education teacher, Linda brings a positive and practical perspective to the delivery of meaningful, measurable services.

Michael Levin is President of the Levin Legal Group, P.C., a firm located in suburban Philadelphia and concentrating in labor and employment, civil rights, litigation, schools and education and workers ’ compensation. He was the 2007 recipient of the President’s Award for Distinguished Career Achievement in School Law presented by the Pennsylvania School Boards Solicitors Association.

Focus Group Presentations will include:

•  Dr. Cheryl Robinson is the supervisor of the office of minority achievement for the Arlington Public Schools. She coordinates professional development opportunities for school employees focusing on the way that schools can improve the delivery of services to students and families of diverse backgrounds.

·  Tom Sechrist is a workshop instructor at the Pennsylvania State University, Great Valley campus, for the Chester County Intermediate Unit, instructor and trainer of “The Invisible Minority: Dealing with Homophobia in Schools” for the Chester County Addictive Diseases Council Course and for the County of Chester Human Services Department. He has over 45 years experience as teacher, principal, Assistant Superintendent and college instructor. In addition, Tom serves an independent educational consultant, trainer/ instructor, substitute administrator, strategic planning facilitator, and personal/professional life coach.

·  Lt. Earl Saurman is with a suburban Philadelphia area Police Department and is part of a team that spearheads his Department’s efforts in school safety. Earl commands his department SWAT Team and has spent most of his 30 year career studying and responding to violence and violent attacks.

•  Don Smith is the Emergency Planning and Response Management Coordinator for the Center for Safe Schools.

•Melanie Lynch graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology. She then earned her Master's degree at Penn State in Counselor Education with an emphasis on eating disorders and chemical dependency. Melanie is in her 16th year as a Health Education Specialist at State College Area High School. Melanie is also an adjunct professor at Penn State, teaching Kinesiology courses.

•Beth Sweeting is Director of Student Outreach at Expectations Women’s Center in central Pennsylvania and the creator ofThe Sexy Truth. As a popular speaker, she has a reputation for her infectious energy, humor and blunt honesty. She backs up her passion for young people with over fifteen years of experience working with students as a public school teacher, athletic coach and youth worker.

·  Beth Bahn is the Director of the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Division of School Health Services.

•  PAPSA Award Winners for Excellence in Pupil Services –(State College School District, South Fayette Twp. School District, PA Virtual Charter School, Upper Darby School District)

o  Annette Brandolini has been Director of Pupil Services in Upper Darby School District since 2003 and has worked in public education since 1983.

o  Dr. Nanci A. Sullivan has spent 33 years in education and serves as the Director of Pupil Personnel for the South Fayette School District for the last 12 years.

o  Jeanne Knouse Director of Learning Enrichment/Gifted Support and Student Services for State College Area School District in State College ,PA.

·  Pleasant Valley School District operates a comprehensive cyber academy spanning grades 5 through 12 and uses the curriculum and method of delivery for alternative education, summer school, homebound instruction and credit recovery.

Dr. Cheryl Robinson – “Gaining on the Gap: Changing Hearts, Minds and Practice”

The book and presentation serves as a guide of the journey taken by six individuals who played a role in moving a school system along a path where race would not be a predictor for academic success. The presentation will share insights to challenges and victories as well as a close look at the presenter’s personal and professional growth.

2:15-4:15 P.M. Session Two – Keynote Speaker Liberty C

"Cyber Technology, Youth, Sex and Schools in 2013”

The program will focus on social networking as it relates to school and the “educational environment. Having a vast and wide range of expertise in serial sexual offenders, specifically pedophiles, SSA Kyle will address how social networking creates opportunities for the offender and, in turn, for those who have to protect children.

4:30-6:30 P.M. Session Two – Keynote Speaker Liberty C

Mr. Jordan Burnham, Minding Your Mind Foundation

“Suicide Prevention”

Mr. Burnham will explore mental health issues and disorders that affect so many youth and adults. The program will address mood disorders, suicide ideation and eating disorders, addictive behavior and bullying. The goal is to provide a better understanding of the signs and symptoms of mental disorders, emphasizing that they are treatable and that help is available.

This presentation will examine the elements of bullying and cyberbullying, the differences between bullying and teasing, and the steps that the judicial system, state legislatures, and the federal government have taken and are taking to stem this tide of students’ technology misuse.

•Tom Sechrist “Homosexuality & Homophobia” Constitution

This interactive workshop creates awareness of homosexuality and homophobia. You’ll examine your belief systems and how that influences your work with students. You’ll gain information and tools to successfully counsel youth, educators and parents that challenge schools facing LGBTQ issues, and take away ideas for creating safe spaces and developing action plans for change.

• PAPSA Award Winners “Outstanding Pupil Services Programs” Declaration

Four school districts will discuss the unique pupil services programs in their districts.

° The State College Area S.D. presentation focuses on the needs of able learners being met through a fully realized Learning Enrichment program addressing the individual learner’s needs beyond the limited scope of a GIEP.

° Upper Darby’s presentation will highlight the ongoing challenges and successes in removing barriers to learning among high-risk students and the vital role that Pupil Services plays in this process.

• Lt. Earl Saurman “Your Role in School Emergencies” Liberty C

This unique program will familiarize participants with tactics and techniques that will assist them in a rational, composed response to high stress, life or death decision making. Attendees will be exposed to strategies to help them effectively managing those school emergency situations which cannot be prevented.

• Pleasant Valley S. D. “Cyber Education Alternatives” Constitution

The presentation will include the steps to take when developing a school district-operated cyber program and some of the many extended applications of this method of curriculum development. The presentation will cover cyber education from the decision of whether or not to create a school district-operated program to the process of determining appropriate extensions of the program.

• Beth Sweeting “The Sexy Truth” Declaration

The presentation focuses on shatter myths about sex and dating, connecting with groups and individuals to bring a fresh perspective on the importance of healthy relationships. The Sexy Truth looks at how people give and receive love, the affects of teenage sex and bonding have on our brain development, developing our whole sexuality (physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and social), and the foundations of healthy relationships.

The Aevidum Program

A banana walks down a crowded high school hallway. Sounds like a bad joke but it far from it. It is the plot of a 5 second public service announcement that one teen hope will spur a nationwide discussion about depression and will save a life. This presentation will introduce you to Aevidum, a movement that is driven by students to promote awareness of teen depression and suicide in schools. The program will describe the steps to take to start Aevidum in your school, as well as providing information on this nationwide initiative.

This program will address issues relating to body image and how the media is directly affecting the way teenagers feel about themselves and their body image. Also, this program will give a brief overview of eating disorders and strategies of how the participant can use their SAP teams to identify students with disordered eating behaviors in their schools. Also in this session, the presenter will share her comprehensive health curriculum that she wrote and had implemented into the health courses. There will be a program overview of how to develop a “Love Your Body” week at any school with little or no money. Great materials will be provided to those who attend.
