POSITION DESCRIPTION: DIRECTOR OF YOUTH MINISTRIES (Full-Time Exempt)

PURPOSE: To provide leadership and coordination for ministries involving the Christian education and spiritual formation of youth from sixth grade through twelfth grade. To work collegially with the Parish Associate for Youth Ministry during her time of service, after which the Director of Youth Ministries will provide full leadership also for the Youth Group and the youth ministry team.

ACCOUNTABILITY: The Director of Youth Ministries reports to and is supported by thePastor/Head of Staff.

WORK WEEK: This position is for 30 hours per week and is a temporary position for one year. The Director of Youth Ministries will be on site and available as necessary and as communicated to the congregation. After the period of service of the Parish Associate for Youth Ministry, this will also include full responsibility for Wednesday evening youth fellowship activities and periodic mission projects and retreats.

BENEFITS: Compensation shall include salary, study leave, and vacation as negotiated and as confirmed in the letter of hire. Other benefits are according tothe policies for full-time, professional exempt employees as set forth in the Personnel Policy Manual.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate for continual improvement vibrant ministries for a well-rounded ministry with youth that fosters a holistic, experiential, Christ-centered faith including but not limited to the following:
  • Planning, communicating, and participating in activities and events
  • Recruiting and equipping adults for leadership
  • Supervising volunteers who work with youth programs
  • Developing spiritual nurture including Biblical literacy
  • Building relationships with youth, serving as a strong role model towards the goal of leading them to know and actively follow Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
  • Implementing educational, fellowship, and service ministries by and for youth which will lead to spiritual growth and application of Biblical principles in everyday life.
  1. Oversee and coordinate programs including but not limited to the following:
  • Sunday School from sixth grade through twelfth grade
  • Middle School Ministry (to be developed and grown)
  • High School Wednesday Night Youth Group (to be grown)
  • Mission opportunities (e.g., Race4Rwanda, mission week, summer camp)
  • Confirmation class
  • Other opportunities to be developed to meet the goals of Christian education and spiritual formation.
  1. Support the Youth Group and the youth ministry team, initially working collegially with the interim Parish Associate for Youth Ministry.
  1. Serve as a member of and a staff resource to the Learning Committee and its Youth Subcommittee, working with the Subcommittee to select curriculum for youth, establish and monitor the annual budget, and outline and implement goals that support the youth of the congregation and the mission of the Church.
  1. Support and nurture parents with their youths’ spiritual formation.
  1. Participate in the connectional nature of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), particularly with the Presbytery, in matters of youth Christian education and spiritual formation and, initially working collegially with the interim Parish Associate for Youth Ministry, in matters of youth fellowship and mission.
  1. With pastoral staff and lay leaders, educate the congregation about the importance of ministry with youth.
  1. Attend staff meetings weekly.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Has a strong commitment to Christ and to the Christian education and spiritual formation of youth.
  1. Possesses a bachelor’s or graduate degree in education and experience related to youth education programming and working with youth.
  1. Exhibits solid interpersonal, planning, teaching, and mentoring skills.
  1. Demonstrates the ability to work harmoniously and compassionately with parents and youth.
  1. Is able to be decisive in crisis situations and is also flexible and of a collegial spirit.
  1. Is committed to being present on Sunday mornings, on Wednesday evenings, and on other occasions and events when programs for youth are offered.

RELATIONSHIPS: The Director of Youth Ministries is a member of the professional staff, is supervised by the Pastor/Head of Staff, and works with the pastoral staff, with the Director of Children’s Ministries, with the Learning Committee and the Youth Subcommittee, and with lay leaders and volunteers. TheDirector of Youth Ministriesworks collegially with the interim Parish Associate for Youth Ministry during her period of service.

EVALUATION: Performance evaluation and salary review will be conducted annually by thePastor/Head of Staff with participation by a member of the Personnel Subcommittee if requested by either party.
