Subject: SOCIAL STUDIES
April 8 - 12
4-6.3: Explain the specific events and issues that led to the Civil War, including sectionalism, slavery in the territories, states’ rights, the presidential election of 1860, and secession.
4-6.4: Summarize the significant battles, strategies, and turning points of the Civil War, including the battles of Fort Sumter and Gettysburg, the Emancipation Proclamation, the role of African Americans in the war, the surrender at Appomattox, and the assassination of President Lincoln.

SOCIAL STUDIES

/ MATERIALS
Day One / Standards:4-6.3
  1. TTW review abolitionist by using the Abolitionist Museum PP or Facebook profiles of Abolitionist (Abolitionist quiz given this week)
  2. TTW will ask, “If you were running for President of the US today, what would be the most important things to you?” Take responses and talk about how the major issues for the time of the Election of 1860 (Lincoln vs. Douglas) was slavery.
  3. TSW take notes on the Election of 1860, sectionalist, and the secession using the PP
  4. TSW glue in the map that show how the US was divided during the Civil War
  5. TSW analyze two quotes from the last slide and tell what they think they mean.
  6. TSW create a candidate campaign poster using book information pg. 481,482. The poster must include: a picture of the candidate (drawn), a slogan for your candidate (something to show the what the candidate’s beliefs are), view on slavery, views on Southern secession
  7. TSW present their campaign poster.
  8. (I will include examples on the PP of campaign posters to show the class)
Assessment: TTW assess students on their understanding of the Election of 1860, sectionalism, and the secession by having students create a campaign poster for Lincoln or Douglas that explain their views on these issues. / PP

Day Two / Standards: Standards:4-6.4
  1. TTW give SS quiz (DO Copies)
  2. TSW view a USV on the Battle of Sumter, The Battle of Gettysburg, and Vicksburg
  3. TSW take notes using the important battles PP in battles chart
  4. TSW divide in groups and use their notes and SS book to fill out an important battles chart and choose ONE battle to act out for the class (Fort Sumter pg.484-486, Gettysburg pg. 507,Vicksburg pg. 509)
  5. TSW share their charts and act out their battle for the class
Assessment: TTW assess students on their understanding of the importance of the battles by filling in a chart and acting out a battle. / Quiz

Day Three / Standards:4-6.4
  1. TSW watch a USV “Emancipation Proclamation”
  2. TSW read pg. 500 in their SS book and complete a Multiflow Map (cause and effects) of the Emancipation Proclamation
  3. TSW take notes on the EP and
  4. TSW take notes on the EP and End of the Civil War in their SS notebook using the PP
  5. TSW watch a cute Emancipation Proclamation song (cartoon) on youtube(linked to PP)
  6. TSW make a flow map sequencing the important events of the Civil War as a review. (I saved an example of a flow map in commons for students to compare theirs to, or if you would like you can copy it for them to add to their notes.)
Assessment: TTW assess students on their understanding of the Emancipation Proclamation, and the important events of the Civil War by creating a Flow map sequencing the important events. / PP
