PUC SCHEDULES FINAL WORKSHOPS ON

ALTERNATIVE PLAN TO CARMEL RIVER DAM

The California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) will hold two workshops in Monterey on October 2, 2001, to receive public feedback on an alternative plan to Carmel River Dam.

The alternative plan -- known as the draft Plan B Project Report -- is part of the Commission's efforts to comply with Assembly Bill 1182, which directed the PUC to develop a non-dam alternative water supply strategy to California-American Water Company's proposed dam on the Carmel River.

The Plan B Project Report represents the culmination of nearly two years of work in developing a recommended mix of components in a water supply contingency plan for the Monterey Peninsula.

The workshops, identical in presentation content, will be held from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Monterey, Grove Room, at One Old Golf Course Road in Monterey.

PUC Water Division staff and consultants will present their recommendations, which are based on an extensive evaluation and screening process informed by ongoing public input. The report builds on both the "Status Report on Plan B Components" (May 2001) as well as the "Component Screening Report" (November 2000).

In keeping with the commitment to public involvement, break-out stations will be set up after the presentation to allow meeting attendees to pose questions and comments to the report authors regarding each of the proposed components and their recommended mix.

Copies of the report are available on the project website at www.edaw.com/planb. Copies of the report are also available at the following public libraries: Pacific Grove Library, Pacific Grove; City of Monterey Library, Monterey; Harrison Memorial Branch Library, Carmel; Monterey County Free Libraries, Salinas; Seaside Branch Library and California State University, Monterey Bay Library Learning Complex, Seaside; Marina Branch Library, Marina; Carmel Valley Branch Library, Carmel Valley; and Chamberlin Library Building, Presidio of Monterey Annex.
