Rule 1: Use a semicolon to connect 2 independent clauses.

Example:Humpback whales are the slowest moving of all whales; they are also the most playful.

Rule 2: Use a semicolon before a conjunctive adverb when it joins 2 independent clauses. (Note: Add a comma after the conjunctive adverb.)

Example:Humpback whales are very social whales; therefore, they take time to play.

Other conjunctive adverbs:

Rule 3:Use a semicolon to separate items in a series of 3 or more if the items already contain commas.

Example: Dances can tell a story, set a mood, or express emotions; offer fun, relaxation, and companionship; or assist in the treatment of physical and emotional ailments.
