From the President's pen

Our first formal meeting for the year last week was the occasion for our very own "Dr Phil" to report on the world Diabetes Conference, which was held in Melbourne in December 2013. Phil described to us the two main Types of diabetes, their origins, their symptoms and their treatment. New developments are happening all the time and the last developments include insulin pumps that will eventually be able to respond directly to blood glucose levels, and stem cells that will hopefully be "persuaded" to change into beta-cells that produce insulin and then inserted into the body.
As shown below, it was my pleasure to induct Simon Blight as a new member. Simon has previously been a member of our Club and has recently returned to work close by at Willis Australia in Flinders Street.
This week, our speaker will be Johan Heller. Johan has been here from Germany for 2 years. He is trained as a cartographer and will no doubt be telling us about what that means!

ROTARY CLUB OF ADELAIDE LIGHT – ROTARY CLUB OF BOGOTA SUBA

Programme of Scholarships for Technical and Technological Students
FINAL REPORT 2013
Our Bogota Suba Rotary Club presents to the President and to all the Members of the Rotary Club of Adelaide Light, The Final Report 2013, Report related with the different activities, resources and expenses destined for the development of the Programme of Scholarships for Technical and Technological Studies of young people registered in SENA´s Academic Programmes, who live in the Sector of Miramar, located in Suba, Bogotá, C. D.
2013 was an important period for this Programme: We have the visit of two very important Members of the Rotary Club of Adelaide Light: Angus Tuck and Feisar Joya. It was a success because the Members of our Rotary Club Bogota Suba and specially, the students, who have the Scholarships, took the opportunity to know how we work and how the students use the benefit of these fellowships. Also Angus and Feisar, knew about the studies, projections and possibilities of each student to finish his or her studies. An important aspect: The most part of students who finished in 2010-2012, are working and some of them, also, are studying at the University. The Colombian Law gives the opportunity to the SENA´s Students to homologate their studies in order to continue at the University with 50% - 60% of studies approved in the same area, they studied at SENA.
We began 2013 with 24 students and finished with 9. During the year, we had a top of 25 students. On October, we received 2 new students for a total of 14 on December 21st, 2013. On December, 5 students finished their studies and one left it because of work. In total, 15 students finished their studies in 2013. On January 2014, 9 will continue, also 3 new students who have presented documents, for a total of 12 on April, 2014.
This Program began in October 2009 and since that time, we have benefit a total of 43 students until 31/12/13, and paid 181 trimesters for US $21.153, the most part given by the Rotary Club of Adelaide Light. This Program has helped each student approximately for four (4) trimesters.
COMMENTS
This Programme is one of most known in Suba. Other Communities, different to Miramar, are also, interested to receive it. At the same time, people in Suba know more about Rotary, especially young people who has the same conditions of poverty of Miramar.
Visits of Members of your Rotary Club of Adelaide Light, are very important because students and Rotary Members have the opportunity to exchange ideas, opinions, points of view concerning social conditions, options and suggestions about the importance of the Rotary help and how it has contributed to change the life of a Community.
Our Rotary Club of Bogota Suba also does efforts in order to obtain other financial sources in order to give more Scholarships, especially to new sectors of Suba. We hope to find one or two organizations to help us to extend this Programme and to offer new Programmes such as the Continue Education and the School of Arts for children (age 5 to 12).
Dear Members of the Adelaide Light Rotary Club, Many thanks for your effort to help us. You can be sure that our Bogota Suba Rotary Club will continue working in benefit of poor communities, especially for young students, men and women, who have a strengthening responsibility of changing the life of its own Community.

Animal Games
A team of little animals and a team of big animals decided to play football. During the first half of the game, the big animals were winning. But during the second half,a centipede scored so many touchdowns that the little animals won the game. When the game was over, the chipmunk asked the centipede, “Where were you during the first half?” He replied “Putting on my shoes!”

Bad Food
A Doctor was addressing a large audience:
"The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long- term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. But there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have, or will, eat it.
Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?"
After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, "Wedding Cake."
