1 Introduction

1.1What is Controlled Assessment?

ControlledAssessmentisanewformofinternalAssessment.Followingacourseworkreviewby QCA,ControlledAssessmenthasbeenintroducedaspartofnearlyallnewGCSEs,toreplace coursework.

High,mediumorlimitedcontrollevelsaresetforeachoftheControlledAssessmentprocesses: tasksetting,tasktakingandtaskmarking.Foreachstage,thelevelofcontrolwillensurereliability andauthenticity,andmakeAssessmentsmoremanageableforteachersandcandidates.

WeightingofControlledAssessmentsisdefinedbyQCAsubjectcriteriaand,dependingonthe subject,willbe25%or60%ofthetotalassessment.

In response to reforms announced by the Government and in response to Ofqual mandated changes to GCSEs, unitised assessment of this qualification is being replaced by linear assessment.

This means that candidates commencing a two year course from September 2012 will take all of their GCSE units at the end of the coursein June 2014.

1.2What does ‘control’ actually mean?

QCAhasproduceda GlossaryoftermsforControlledAssessmentregulations.Thelevelsof controlsaredefinedasfollows:

Formalsupervision(Highlevelofcontrol)–thecandidatemustbeindirectsightofthe supervisoratalltimes.Useofresourcesandinteractionwithothercandidatesistightly prescribed.

Informalsupervision(Mediumlevelofcontrol)– questions/tasksareoutlined,theuseof resourcesisnottightlyprescribedandassessableoutcomesmaybeinformedbygroup work.Supervisionisconfinedto(i)ensuringthatthecontributionsofindividualcandidates

arerecordedaccurately,and(ii)ensuringthatplagiarismdoesnottakeplace.Thesupervisor mayprovidelimitedguidancetocandidates.

Limitedsupervision(Limitedlevelofcontrol)–requirementsareclearlyspecified,butsome workmaybecompletedwithoutdirectsupervisionandwillnotcontributedirectlyto assessableoutcomes.

1.3What is the purpose of this Guide?
