Creating the Position

List out below what tasks in your business you need the most help with. Then, use those tasks to help create a job description.

Also create a list of “job qualifications” or “intangibles” you are looking with regard to that position. Keep in mind your core values. Some sample intangibles include: honesty, integrity, excitement, willingness to learn.

Promoting the Position

Network

Think of people within your network (family, friends, clients, etc.) who you think would be ideal candidates for the job description you created. These are the people you should reach out to personally and offer a job. List these people below.

You may wish to approach these people in the following way:

“Hey [name], we are creating a new[name of position] position here at [name of business], and I think you have some of the qualities we are looking for in the ideal candidate such as [give some examples]. I would prefer to hire someone I already know and trust for the position, so if you were interested in talking about whether you would be a good fit, let me know and we’ll schedule a time to talk about it. What do you think?”

Network Referrals

Also think about people who you trust would refer quality job prospects to you if you were to ask them. List them below. Also consider asking your members for referrals.

Outside your network

Where else can you promote this position? Are there local colleges or job boards? What websites do you want to use? List these below.

Consider using a similar template when promoting a position outside your network:

[Name of business] is seeking a part time [job title] at their [name of city] location. No experience is necessary. On the job training will be provided. We are a company dedicated to changing the lives of its members by delivering a great fitness experience, providing excellent service, and building a community. Qualified individuals must be punctual, organized, and have a strong interest in fitness. Entrepreneurial interest is a plus.

Scripted Presentation

You need to create a scripted presentation to deliver to all job prospects for their interviews. In the presentation, you should include information on what your business is, how it operates, why it exists, and why you are hiring. Refer to your mission, vision, and core values document to help create the script. Write out your thoughts below.

Questions should be prepared in advance and should be related to both the presentation you gave and to what you ultimately are looking for in an employee. Categories of questions are listed below. Below each, write out one to two discussion questions you could ask the job candidate.
